DPS forms and reloads

Anyone notice that DPS has removed the CHL - 87 (Affidavit of Eligibility) from the down loadable forms? Luckily, I had a copy in my files to use.

Any instructors require their students to us factory ammo to qualify? I know DPS requires instructors on the DPS range. AFAIK, we are NOT required to do that to students.

Regarding ammo.....the only limitation is what you or the range you use requires. Nothing in the administrative code about it. While some instructors I've seen require SAAMI ammo like DPS, most just require manufactured ammo and no reloads.

I don't see anything in the rules that prohibit reloaded ammo or static targets.

I'm curious why CHL Instructors would require factory new ammo - I know that there's nothing in the training I got for the NRA Instructors classes that tells us that's a consideration. Since I'm waiting for a slot into a CHL Instructors class, I'm curious as to the rationale (unless it's a range requirement).

DPS has a list of approved ammunition suppliers. With them, it is a liability issue. At least that's the way it was explained to me.

I prefer my students use factory ammo. I don't insist on the list that DPS requires. If a student uses his own reloads or commercial remanufactured ammo it's ok by me. Ammo loaded by "Uncle Bud" or Bubba the next door neighbor, not so much. :tiphat:

The only failures in ammo that I have had, have been in the many DPS instructor proficiency tests I have taken since 1995 using factory ammo. Failure to fire on a 9mm round, two on 38 special, several on 32 HR ammo that was too long to chamber in the cylinder properly, causing the cylinder to bind (Ruger SP101). This last problem forced me to take a re test with a borrowed revolver and ammo. During those years I fired a hundred times more of my reloaded ammo without any failures. Go figure!
