Instructor Background Check - Long Wait?

#1

Post by Sangiovese »

Hello all,

I was just wondering if there is a "typical" time frame for instructor applicants to wait between submitting everything and the completion of the background check/assignment to instructor class? I applied online at the end of January and got delayed when the CHL 90 forms went AWOL  but I got everything submitted early in March once the form was updated (mailed it on March 6th).

I expected it to take a few months, so I'm not surprised that I'm still "under review" at the 3 month point but I was curious about how long it typically takes. My experience has been that waiting is a bit easier if you have an idea how long you're going to be waiting. If it makes a difference, I do have my NRA certs and included a copy of my credentials when I submitted the CHL-90... so that shouldn't cause any delays.

Thanks!

If they work as they previously have, your status won't change until AFTER you take the instructors training course (and have your certificate in hand).

Thanks for the info! I suppose that means that my "update" will be getting an email about instructor class (and I can quit checking my status online every couple days!).

Taking that into consideration, I guess I should rephrase my question. Is there a typical time between submitting all the paperwork and getting an email about attending instructor class?

I got all of my paperwork sent to DPS (NRA instructor, CHL-90...the new one, etc) the 2nd or 3rd week of March. I just attended the June instructor class. I had previously done the online instructor application, fingerprints and old CHL-90 the first week of January, but I believe it was "on hold" until I got the new CHL-90 and instructor certificate sent in.

As for the online update.....mine didn't go "all green" until the week AFTER I got home from class.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like it's around 6 months from submission to class... so I'm halfway there :)

Would have been groovy to get in a summer class so I don't have to skip a week of school... but it looks like I will probably get a class in the fall. I guess I will use the time to try to find something besides my little LCR to shoot the test with (assuming we will still have to shoot with both after the change). I have no doubt I can pass with it, but 50 rounds with that little guy is a beating!

I originally applied in Dec and got in the June class. It's worth the wait. A lot of good instruction in the class.
Not having that much experience with a revolver and being nervous I failed first two attempts of the qualification (218 which is 7 points short of passing) however since you are allowed three attempts, I've been practicing a lot and shot a 247 last time at the range so will be at the shooting qualification of the next class to redeem myself.

No worries as I had not intended to start teaching until the laws settle down in Sept.

Additional information to earlier post. Since there was no July class they invited me back to shoot. Cannot say enough about the dedication and spirit of the instructors. He went way out of his way to get me thru this. I passed. Still need a lot of improvement, however I'm thrilled to have passed.

Twomillilium, I really enjoyed the class, thought they did a great job. I was very disappointed in myself however with some physical handicap and really bad at taking tests, they got me thru it!
