I am a Active Duty Marine stationed in South Carolina, I am a proud Texas Native (born and raised). I've apply for a SC permit, but I am trying to get a Texas permit (I know the two states honor each others permit, but with a Texas permit your license is honor by I think 9 more states). But my only challenge is the firearms training class, I've read the Texas Codes about requirement to apply for a permit, I like I am stationed in S. Carolina and don’t plan on going back home to Texas for a while now. Does anyone know how I can get around taking the firearms course to get my license ( I know that because I am active duty Idon’tt have to take the range portion of the class). Let me clarify I am not trying to get out of taking the course, but I am looking for a way to get it done from here in South Carolina

To qualify from exemption from the firearms proficiency, you must within the five years preceding the date of your application have completed a course of training in handgun proficiency or familiarization as part of your service with the armed forces.

If you meet that I guess you could take a course in SC

The problem would be getting an instructor to SC.

I imagine you will need to come to Texas to get certified.

Edit to add; Thank you for your service, Marine.

Range Approval

You would also have the problem of a DPS approved range to shoot on as well... AFIK the DPS has not approved any ranges outside Texas.

I'll ask the DPS about out-state range approval (but don't think it will happen.)

Seems you are going to have to come back to Texas if you want a license.

And may I add my thanks for your service as well?
