Did I Screw Up?

I let my NRA certification lapse because I really didn't want to be tied to their curriculum. I only teach small groups and prefer to cover what THEY want/need to cover. Also, I teach only rarely, mostly CHL or familiarization/safety classes to friends and family.
So, now I'm coming up for renewal for my CHL instructor certification and the form sounds like I have to have some other current certification to renew. Uh-Oh. So I think, well I'll just take the Basic Pistol instructor class again. The local guy I took it from is no longer doing it.
So, is there an angle I'm not seeing? Do I HAVE to have another current certification?
I don't do this to make money. With costs, I barely break even. I only do it because I enjoy it and think I'm pretty good at it. I don't want to sink money and days off to get a certification to maintain my CHL instructor status if I don't have to.
Any sage advice?

You have to have a NRA Instructor Certification or TECLEOSE certification or some other nationally recognized certification in order to get a new CHL Instructor certification. As for renewal, you have to fill out the new CHL-90, correct, which requires proof of one of these certifications. Ergo, you need to have one of these certifications. They have always been a requirement. DPS is choosing to enforce the letter of the law now. There have been a couple of other threads here on the forum about this situation.
Depending on how long ago you let your NRA instructor certification expire, you may have to take the BIT again as well.

That's what I was afraid of. I knew about the requirement to obtain initial certification, but not to renew. Unless there's some sort of end-around, I guess I'll have to decide if its worth getting my credentials again through the NRA or let my CHL instructors certification lapse as well.
I can understand the requirement for initial, but not for renewal.

I don't believe it has yet been determined for instructor renewals. I received the following on Feb 15th. after inquiring about needing a CHL-90.
Thank you for using the Regulatory Services Division’s website.
You may have received an early reminder in the mail about renewing your CHL Instructor registration. Because of ongoing changes that are in progress at the legislative level, we are unable to provide additional information or details about the requirements for your CHL Instructor renewal at this time. You may have noticed that the CHL-90 is not currently available and the CHL information on the website is under revision at this time.
The renewal period for CHL Instructors is set to begin at 6 months prior to expiration. Your patience is appreciated while we continue to update the forms and website to reflect the changes. Please lookout for a new reminder notice this summer that will provide you with all of the requirements and updates at that time.

It looks like the actual law doesn't draw a line between new and renewal. Are they planning to ignore the law again?

Don't know, but they haven't determined the process yet, and apparently are waiting to account for any changes due to this years legislature changes.
