Signed up for required NRA classes.anyone want to join me?
I just signed up for the NRA classes that will be required for us, in case any would like to sign up or do this class together. It is a Mon/Tues April 1&2 as Sat/Sun is out for me. There is a pre-pay discount. This includes the required Basic Instructor incorporated into the Home Firearm Safety class. I understand these classes are getting filled quickly as word gets around of the requirement. http://trainersgroup.net/classdetail.asp?ID=172" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You will be required to be a pistol instructor. That menas you must take the pistol shooting instructor course. And if you are not already an NRA instructor, you will have to do the Basic Instructor Training portion also (usually incorporated into the course.) Any other courses will not count for the CHL requirement.garcia946 wrote:Just curious , what classes are you going to do? I suppose for what I've read I'm going to need them also.

No, you can't just take the BIT course, it must be done with a course. Once you have it you can skip the BIT portion for other certifications (rifle, shotgun, etc.)garcia946 wrote:Keith B wrote:You will be required to be a pistol instructor. Wayne - We are already NRA certified, so can't join you at the class. But, since you are coming up all the way from Brownwood, I imagine you are spending the night here. How about we get together for dinner on Monday evening?

The 2 that are listed is the Basic Pistol and Firearm Safety in the Home which includes the BIT. I read that it is now official that we will have to be certified prior to renewal.garcia946 wrote:Just curious , what classes are you going to do? A friend of mine spoke with one of the DPS Instructors who told them that all must be certified TECLOSE or NRA instructors prior to renewal. I know a lot of us had assumed, but this was first time I heard it as coming from anyone official. Or were you meaning where did I read that BIT came with the Firearm Safety in the Home course? That is stated on the link above.sjfcontrol wrote:Where did you read that?wgoforth wrote:The 2 that are listed is the Basic Pistol and Firearm Safety in the Home which includes the BIT. No offense intended towards your friend, but until DPS puts that out publicly, isn't that kind of like a "friend of a friend said"? FYI, I've got no dog in this fight as I'm not an instructor (yet) and am just taking my NRA courses this weekend.wgoforth wrote:A friend of mine spoke with one of the DPS Instructors who told them that all must be certified TECLOSE or NRA instructors prior to renewal. No, I was asking about the renewal requirement. First I've heard anybody claim it was official.wgoforth wrote:A friend of mine spoke with one of the DPS Instructors who told them that all must be certified TECLOSE or NRA instructors prior to renewal. I thought the grapevine was the officially mechanism for DPS announcements. Isn't that how they have announced other changes like submitting student documents electronically and using DL photos for CHL?

Re: Signed up for required NRA classes.anyone want to join m
I submit this information for first-timers, not renewals: In speaking with a level 3 supervisor at DPS, I was having some (DPS) challenges getting my CHL license paperwork going. I told him the confusion might lay with my open CHL Instructor application. He immediately asked me if I had my NRA instructor certification, to which I replied I am taking the class today. Good, he said, because that is being required of all TX CHL instructors, and I know that there are some instructors today who won't be instructors this time next year.
Take it for what it's worth. I think DPS knew January 1 what their stance was going to be on renewal instructors, but did not want to put out any information until they had the CHL-90 revamped with official language. The fact that someone at DPS emailed out renewal information inadvertently got the ball rolling faster. Hopefully renewal instructors that are members of this forum will be ahead of the curve!!
And no, this is not hearsay. This is my conversation with DPS! And by the way, I did get my NRA cert done yesterday/today, so hopefully I can get into an Austin class sometime this year!!
