On May 20th, an El Paso CHL instructor was arrested and charged with a 3rd degree felony for selling CHL-100's. The instructor took a fee and issued one or more CHL-100's without any classroom instruction or range qualifications.
What idiocy! Did he/she think no one would find out? I haven't heard of this happening since the early days of the CHL program. I'm glad this instructor is gone.
I'd hate to be one of this instructor's "students."
Chas.

I did not know it had taken place in the early days.
This is the 1st time I have heard of it. I know, I know I am more than just a little nieve.

It really doesn't surprise me. In every vocation, there are always a few people who don't play by the rules.

Hope he rots in state prison for a LONG time
Good riddance

I really doubt that he will get any jail time. He will probably get a fine and have his instructor permit revoked.

A felony conviction means bye bye gun ownership and other rights. Not worth it!

I agree that whatever he did was not worth it. He will probably get offered a plea bargain for a misdemeanor.

Being that I took my CHL in El Paso in December, could the name be posted or possibly sent to me via pm. I would hate to think that maybe my CHL could be in jeopardy.

Did you receive your CHL-100 without any classroom instruction or range qualification? If that wasn't what happened to you, then I suspect your CHL isn't in jeopardy. Now, if that IS what happened to you....

No of course I did the class and range time. I would be bothered that maybe if the instructor is convicted that they question the validity of students CHL's.
I have no idea who the instructor is at this point, so it could easily not apply to me at all.

I don't have his/her name but I might be able to get it. You will be fine, even if your instructor was this same person, so long as you took the entire class. It's likely that he/she didn't do this with everyone, but if the instructor was foolish enough to give a stranger a CHL-100 without a class, then who knows. Obviously, the stranger was an undercover DPS trooper responding to complaints about the instructor.

That would be my concern. In all probability this isn't an isolated incident, at some point it has happened enough that DPS became aware of it. 1,10,50,100 times who knows, hopefully it was a very small number and someone just blabbed about it too much.

I just participated in the 6-12 class in Georgetown. This, and many other examples of Instructors 'selling' the CHL-100 were reviewed as opportunities to be prosecuted by the State.
We were told that the DPS is taking measures to prosecute these type of offenses to the fullest.
I believed them... :)

Absolutely! They are not putting undercover troopers in classes when they have any reports of this type of thing. The woman in Houston was hit for not doing the range work.

Now that was quite a typo!! It should read "[T]hey are NOW putting undercover troopers in classes when they have any reports of this type of thing."
Sorry for the mistake.
