Guys, I have a strange question and it was NOT covered in our instructors course to my recollection and I even went over my notes...
Whats the difference in teaching a renewal class vs. a first time CHL class? Obviously the renewal class is shorter, but whats being cut out?

Theoretically, the same 4 primary topics to be covered in both. Obviously impossible to cover all as thoroughly in shorter renewal classes. Same written test and shooting test. In "renewal only" classes, as "update", I put more emphasis on legislative changes in the last 2 sessions. Therefore, when integrating renewal students in an original license class, once the common paperwork is completed, I get into Chapter 9 pretty early so renweal students can be cut loose around mid-day.

Thanks for the reply Greybeard. This helped a lot.

Guys - I am not intending to hijack your thread but I am curious about the renewal class. It seems to me that having renewal students show up at 1pm and sit in the rest of a first time class, is not what the renewal class should be. Am I off base?

Well, ideally you want the students to only be 'refreshed' on what they learned the first time around. As I understand it, the classes are positioned to where renewal students can come in and sit through a contiguous portion of the class to get the refresher materials in order to take the test.

It depends on what takes place in the second half of the class. In my classes, we cover Use of Force/Deadly Force, Legal Issues and Safe Handling/Storage of Firearms in the second half of the class. We do a thorough review of everything the students might see on the test, which includes questions on Non-violent Dispute Resolution, etc. In my opinion, the eligibility requirements and Non-Violent Dispute resolution are secondary for the renewals, but we do cover changes in the laws, etc. The renewal students definitely need a comprehensive review Force/Deadly Force and Legal Issues.
