Money for classes

#1

Post by too-tall »

Hello, while I am not an instructor, I have a question for yall.
I assumed the money I paid you guys for the class went in your pocket. At the last renewal class I took, the instructor said most of that money he had to send in to Austin. Is this true? I thought you got to keep all this. I thought Austin got their money from him taking HIS class, and the license fee.
Any I was just wondering............

I'd be interest in this info as well. I was under the same impression as too-tall.

If you don't make any money, why do you do it?

That's news to me.

' Been doing it since '95 and, other than for personal CHL, the only money I've ever had to send to DPS was for instructor schools and $5 per student (in advance) for stocks of numbered (blue-bordered) certificates/TR-100s.

My cost per student include $5 for the certificate (which is the only payment direct to Austin), plus the costs for the TxCHIA manual which I give out, plus the costs for the range time/targets. Then there is the cost I incur doing pictures and paying a LEO to do fingerprints. Each student costs me about $30-35 directly.

After you factor in the costs of a trip to Austin every couple of years for the instructor's renewal, its easy to see you're not going to get rich teaching CHL. But it is interesting, insightful, and fun, so as long as it pays for itself and puts a little extra money in the "kitty" its worth it.

Yea, the other 1500+ instructors made "their million" about 1995, 1996. Or lost it.

It sounds like your guy may be handling your application money for you. Not too many do this- they let you stuff the envelop and send in the money order.
One guy here used some applicant fees to pay his bills and sat on their applications for about six months. He always has had a cash flow problem.
