I have requested clarification and confirmation from NRA HQ and I have permission to post the response when it is received. I asked the three most common questions I am receiving:
  • 1) how many classes will instructors have to teach in order to renew;
    2) do they have to teach one or more classes in every discipline for which they hold NRA certification; and
    3) will teaching non-NRA classes such as the Texas Concealed Handgun License Course qualify as “documented activity” for purposes of NRA Instructor renewal.

Now that was a fast response! This is from NRA HQ:

Questions:
1) how many classes will instructors have to teach in order to renew;
ANSWER: At least reported ONE class since their previous renewal(recertification) cycle. Does NOT have to be an NRA class, we just want to see that they are active.
2) do they have to teach one or more classes in every discipline for which they hold NRA certification;
ANSWER: Negative, they just need to be active – practicing their craft, stay in the game, etc…
3) will teaching non-NRA classes such as the Texas Concealed Handgun License Course qualify as “documented activity” for purposes of NRA Instructor renewal.
ANSWER: Absolutely. They can report this as NON-NRA affiliated courses.

This gives instructors what we need to know in order to meet recertification requirements in terms of teaching activity.

Which is, if I got the message right from the NRA Training guru, the primary message they want to get across: they want you to be more active at the instructor's portal. Since that's the primary way they're going to tell folks about happenings, changes, etc.

Now, if we could convince DPS/CHL to do the same thing with their portal.

OK, I guess this is going to be another learning curve. I posted an "Other" class in the instructors portal. It posted and is ready for me to do a class report. Of course at the time is shows "0" students. I attempted to add my students from my CHL-8....but it REQUIRES address, and telephone numbers. I don't feel that is something I should elect to share. My students may not want the barrage of mail and phone calls.

If I submit it as is, it is going to show 0 students, 0 pass, 0 fail. Like it didn't happen.

Has anyone successfully registered a CHL class as an "Other" and completed the class report? If you have please share.

I don't know if classes have to be advertised on the NRA site in order to report them after they are completed. I'll give it a try.

Chas.
The instruction manual says that "other" courses will not show up on the NRA site when potential students search. However, it does not give a good explanation on how to complete a class report for an "other" category. It just shows the completion for a normal NRA course.

I am guessing that unless you manually add a student that you will not have an opportunity to fill out the report and list number of students, pass, fail, etc. And, as I mentioned they want full information in order to add said student.

That could be a problem until they get that rearranged. If I understand correctly, CHL holder information is confidential and I do not have the authority to release my student information to anyone but the state.
