Does dps dictate sa or da on the revo qual?

Shooting my grandfathers colt miii 357 seems like a 20 lb da pull and a sweet 4 lb sa pull...

Hope I can cock and squeeze.

There's no rule against shooting your revolver portion of the re-qualification single-action (SA).
If you have the time and inclination to do so, go for it!

Just be careful DPS is big on push off test and they fail to understand that any revolver will push off with enough force and that sears tend to break if someone pushes it too hard and makes it push off. Some old guns cannot be fixed do to the lack of parts availability

The push off test is when you cock and unloaded revolver and then using your thumb you push on the hammer to see if it will fall. This is done because some want to be gun smiths butcher a trigger job and grind the wrong angle on the sear surfaces which make the hammer fall real easy with a push off test. The problem is that all revolvers will push off with enough force. The test is only about 1 pound of pressure with the thumb and nothing more.

At DPS they have troopers who help out at the range and they line everyone up and then these troopers start checking your guns and they do the push off test. I watched them do it and none of them did it the same way and some used way too much force. DPS even taught my instructor class that we should be doing push off test but did not explain that you can damage someone's gun if you push too hard or that you were only supposed to use about a pound of pressure. They just told us to do push off test on all revolvers.

So if your grandfather's gun is rare and very old you might want to get a different gun. If it is rare and parts are not available and they break it you might regret the loss of a working family heirloom. I don't know what the availability of parts are for the MKIII so might not be much concern but if they break your gun it will not shoot until you get it fixed.

I have always qualified on the DPS range SA with my revolver. I have never had a problem with the Instructors.

I don't have any problems with the instructors either except with the issue of push off test and how they told my class to do them without any clear instruction or warning that you can break someone's gun if you use too much force. I was just warning him since he mentioned that it was his grandfathers gun and he might want to take some precautions if the gun was really old and a family heirloom.

I was just referring to jmains' comment about using SA for the revolver and me not having any problem with the Instructor's trying to stop me from doing that.
