The rocky road to becoming a CHL Instructor

I've got the funding, means and everything else set...but

From reading weeks worth of material, I've come up with this so far.


Before I apply to the DPS CHL Instructor website I need to have the following in my portfolio(as so I am not rushing to get every class taken at once)...

1. NRA BIT Class
2. NRA Instructor Pistol Shooting Course


I am in Houston, Texas. Exactly who do I need to be in contact with to take the previously mentioned certification courses? Specifically the BIT course. If anyone can recommend who or where to find a person/organization who can help me fulfill these requirements I would appreciate it. Some of the information on the NRA instructor portal is spotty at best.

Don't know where you are in Houston, but up Conroe way there are a couple great instructors. If I understand correctly, often times they include/bundle the BIT and the Pistol intructor courses. All the best on your journey!

Just choose the instructor course you want, then enter you zip code and distance you are willing to travel.

You typically take the BIT along with an NRA class if you have not already had it as part of a previous NRA class. As far as I know, the BIT is not offered alone. Just make sure the instructor knows you need it.

Correct, BIT isn't a stand-alone class.

We're not doing instructor classes at PSC now.

There are a number of good NRA training counselors in the Houston area. I suspect as word gets out about the need to be a NRA certified instructor prior to taking the CHL instructor course, you will start seeing more Basic Pistol and BIT courses being made available in the Houston area. Our local training counselor is looking at doing that here in the Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange area. Expect the course dates soon. Especially if they require current NRA certification before existing CHL instructors can renew.

I want to thank you guys for all the great information. Being 28 years old, I plan on teaching for a long time as my side job(plenty of people at my work & my parents work are already fronting me money to take a CHL or basic shotgun course).


Some updates, I am checking into NRA certification first, but I am also going to take the shotgun course as well(I'm a class A sporting clays shooter & practice Olympic skeet, so I don't think it would be that bad) and maybe the metallic cartridge reloading course(I reload as it is).



Now if I can only figure out a business plan. I might take an introductory business course at a local college.

If someone was a NRA instructor in the past and let it lapse, is there a refresher class? Or do they have to start from square one?

I believe that it is back to square one. BIT and Basic Pistol.

Yes, and I don't believe there is even a grace period to renew, so once you get it don't miss your renewal date!!

Keith, that BIT is not in the list there. What about it???

The Basic Pistol Instructor class almost always includes the BIT. If the class is 2 days long - it is included.

I'm taking the Home Firearm Safety & Basic Pistol Instructor courses (which includes the BIT) on the 23rd & 24th in Royse City. I think Mr. Crowe has a few spots open if you are in need of classes in the DFW area.
