Passport Photos no longer needed?
A friend who was in the June Instructor's class said the photos are no longer needed. The DPS can use the existing DL photo. I have read some references to this on the forum previously, but I don't remember it being a done deal. Apparently all applicants need do now is draw a line thorough the photo "location" on the form and write "use DL photo" on it. Is anyone doing this yet? Or am I talking about something everyone else already knows

Re: Passport Photos no longer needed?
This is correct. It is up to the applicant if they want a new photo or just use the existing DL (or state ID card) photo on file. If they want to use the DL photo just mark 'Use exiting Drivers License (State ID Card) photo' on the CHL-6. For renewals, there are actually three options; reuse existing CHL photo (no CHL-6 sent), use DL (or state ID card) photo (see above), or resend new photos with CHL-6.
Crossfire, this is the change I wanted to tell you about and couldn't remember.

I think this is brand new and just got finalized. I am sure it would be broadcast to all the instructors soon.sjfcontrol wrote:Keith B wrote:This is correct. I'm not even sure there is a mechanism in place to "broadcast" information such as this to instructors. The last instructor newsletter was over two years ago, and the one before that was in 2006. Plus, they've moved it (to here if anybody's interested). If they were to put a new one out, nobody'd even know about it.

Just call them up every month and ask if there is anything new.

That might just work but I dont have 45minutes to wait on a warm body to say "No Sir" & hang up.

Re: Passport Photos no longer needed?
It'd be a lot longer than 45 minutes once some 2000+ instructors start calling every month.longtooth wrote:That might just work but I dont have 45minutes to wait on a warm body to say "No Sir" & hang up.
(Anybody know what the current number is? 2,164 as of end of 2010.)

Re: Passport Photos no longer needed?
I don't know about being given an option but I sent in photos with my application and when I received my plastic last week, they used my DL photo instead. I liked my DL photo better anyway so this was fine with me.

Well they told me it had just been canceled when I called this morning. She seemed really unsure about it however, and she wasn't really able to give me a definitive statement. It would probably be good if we could get something in writing?
Re: Passport Photos no longer needed?
I have reconfirmed that you can request they use the existing DL photo if they have one on file for you. Just follow my guidelines in the post above.croc870 wrote:Well they told me it had just been canceled when I called this morning. You got lucky but what if someone doesn't like their DL photo. I would be annoyed at DPS if I followed their instructions and wasted money paying for photos they didn't use.Tbucher1218 wrote:I don't know about being given an option but I sent in photos with my application and when I received my plastic last week, they used my DL photo instead. Re: Passport Photos no longer needed?
I found this in the "Rules" section of the DPS web site:
-----------------------------
TITLE 37
PUBLIC SAFETY AND CORRECTIONS
PART 1
TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY
CHAPTER 6
LICENSE TO CARRY HANDGUNS
SUBCHAPTER B
ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES
RULE §6.12
(3) Photographs. Photographs are required with original concealed handgun license applications ...(removed parts) Upon development of an interface allowing the Regulatory Services Division to access the photographs on file with the Driver License Division system or development of other electronic means to obtain the applicant's photograph, applicants may not be required to submit printed photographs.
---------------------------------
So it looks like they had planned this and now it's effective, but never relaied to Instructors.
