Noob in the Ranks

Post by DFWTT »

Lot's of good info in the search engine for instructor renewal but little for noobs. I have done the online app and L1. What happens now? Am I required to send the CHL-90 prior to being assigned a class? I've downloaded and reviewed it and appears that the majority is not applicable due to never having taught before. Are they still sending a formal application in addition to the online one? Affidavits, print and sign and send in or are they the same as the "check boxes" on the online app? Any other valuable info would be helpful and very much appreciated.

You don't get "assigned" to a chl class. You enroll in one of your choice. All you have to do now is fill out the online app and get L1 to do your fingerprints. They also take your photo. Then go take the class and submit the paperwork from the class. Your instructor should know exactly what you need to send in. To find a class Google "CHL class" and the name of your city. I should have also pointed out that you can search for "instructor" and "Arlington" on the forum and find instructors who are members.

For example:
http://www.greatsouthwestgun.com/map-contact.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or just look here:
http://texaschlforum.com/viewforum.php?f=6" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm sorry if I was unclear. I was referring to the CHL instructor process not CHL.

slight thread jack, but how soon do y'all hear from the state once you've sent in your app? I filled it out and paid online ~2 months ago, mailed it in about 4 weeks ago. I still have not heard from them and, as of today, am not scheduled for any class yet.

Alright, CHL-90 and paper app sent today certified. Looks like the deadline was April 30 for last years apps but maybe that has changed with the new quarterly classes. Everything is in and the website has updated me for prints and online app. I have the same question PB, how long does this process usually take, 30 days? 60? Anybody...

If you filled out the online application and completed the fingerprints you just have to wait to hear back from the state. If they need any additional information from you they will usually notify you in the mail. It doesn't matter if you don't have any prior firearm teaching experience they ask that only in order to determine if you qualify for the 28hour course vs. the 36 hour course.

You can always check the status of your application online (which usually doesn't tell you very much) or you can always call them and wait on hold for 30-45 min to talk to someone.

They will send you notification of which class you will be in and what the location of the class, the requirements, dress code, range rules and what ammo that they allow you to bring.

Hope that helps.

When dealing with the state the time frames vary widely! It really depends of if they received everything they need or if they have to send you notification that they need additional information and how long it takes to look at your background record exc...

I didn't hear anything back for a couple of months and then one day they sent a letter informing me of the class I was scheduled for. I received the notification a good couple of months before the class I was scheduled for.

Very good. That is kinda exactly what I expected. 60days for the placement and another 60 or so for preparation.

I applied in late November. recieved e-mail in early February giving me an option to join class on April 25th or wait for next class some time in August. All info was sent via e-mail After I sent in all my paper work. About five months start to finish. Hurry up and wait mode. :thumbs2:
