Auto Insurance Database

Wife was pulled over by Plano PD. She knew she was not speeding, did not run any lights or signs and I keep the car maintained as far as lights,etc. She had both license ready and insurance ready. The officer told the reason for the stop was the car shows as being un-insured in the TX State Auto Insurance Database.

She showed him the current card as well as last years which was still in the car. He told her we need to contact Hartford and have them register the car with the database. I have never heard of this or had to do this before.

BTW- the officer was polite and professional, no mention of the CHL at all.

I think I would have had to call a "bull" on being told that I had to contact someone regarding my insurance.

If I had the required insurance, and written proof of at least two periods of coverage, I feel I have done my part. Anything else should be done on their end.

It is possible there is an error somewhere that is not linking your license number plate number properly to the database. They will need to validate that and correct it if so.

You said no mention of CHL. Does your wife have a CHL. If so, she would have to show it along with her drivers license if carrying. A CHL is not tied to your license plate number, only your personal drivers license.

Being from that city if I was pulled over for that error, I would show my insurance card and ask if I was free to go. Nothing makes me more upset than them wasting time because of procedural errors. If you are going to take my liberty, property, or money, you had better be in the right.

What they'll do on their end is keep pulling you over until the database is fixed to show you have insurance. It's your choice to contact Hartford or not depending on what's a bigger hassle for you.

They know it is not up to date. Why would they direct the officers not to use as PC? Just another fishing tool in my opinion and most departments are adding it to their fishing line.......

The database is frequently wrong. I love the database because it saves people from getting a ticket for no insurance when they don't have the necessary documentation with them.

I thought a Texas court (I forget if it was El Paso or somewhere else) ruled that it wasn't valid as PC for a stop due to the lack of certification (much like warrants aren't valid until confirmed).

My son had his car for almost a year before we got a notice from the state informing him that he didn't have insurance.
Found out then that somewhere between the dealership and the insurance co., the vin number was off by one digit.
Called State Farm next day and got it corrected.
My .02, check your vin number on the car and make sure it matches your ins. card.

as I understand it is NOT PC or legal to stop for an Insurance check and has actually been ruled as an illegal stop, yes I know the LEO can and sometimes will make up a reason, but to say that your stopped to check your insurance if I remember correctly is illegal and anything else found during that stop is in admisable and void

Call your agent and have them validate the VIN number
Auto insurance is tied to the VIN which is tied to the car

Also ask them up do a manual update to the state database as they dont show coverage

You can explain that she got pulled over for no insurance.

Now, on the same aspect, I have been stopped and told the same thing only so the cop could ask what was in the 6 55gallon drums in the bed of my truck
