Erath County S.O.

Most CHL/LEO contacts are positive, how about yours? Bloopers are fun, but no names please, if it will cause a LEO problems!

Erath County S.O.

Just got done talking to a deputy about our trashcan being destroyed again. Noticed it this morning on the way in from work, and guess what's laying among the wreckage.

A deputy came to get a statement and take possession of the wayward license plate, and in the process asked for my ID. He took the DL, and waved off the CHL saying "I knew that."

Since I wasn't wearing IWB, and had a full coat on over my Coronado vest, I meant to ask him how he knew, (I had been listening to the scanner so I'd know when to meet him at the road, and the information wasn't passed in anything I caught) but we started going over the statement right away and I forgot about it until he left.

He did mention that they had caught a mailbox vandal just a couple months ago by the same method, and that both the prosecution and a couple of small-claims suits had been successful. I wish they'd publicize their success stories in this, though; a front page story describing the sentence and the civil suit damages (without giving a name, so they don't get easy bragging rights) could go a long way as a deterrent.

Were you wearing a cap with NRA, IDPA, or some such insignia?

Maybe the officer was playing a mind game with you.

I have been told by a 'reputable source' that the SO in my county maintains a separate file of who has CHL's. I don't know if they are supposed to do that, but ...

Did you have a vehicle parked where he could see the plates? If your SO is equipped with MDTs, you wouldn't hear anything about it on your scanner.

No MDTs, and this one didn't even appear to be carrying a personal laptop.

OTOH, maybe he figured that anybody who watches their mailboxes and trashcans that closely would also take steps for their own protection, and since I wasn't standing there with a shotgun in hand, I must have had something more discreet.

Maybe it was the sign that says "property protected by smith and wesson".

I suspect it could have something to do with the "chalk outline of a dead body" that KD5NRH put on his driveway to discourage unwanted visitors...

I think you should make a visit to the newspaper folks...Heck, anything they can do to fill up space should be welcome...

My grandfather and I (teenager) were running around the property many years ago, and part of our property line runs along a right of way county road...We came up on a huge spread out pile of trash that had been thrown on and off the fenceline...

We went back to pick up the trailer and go load up all the trash and take it to our "burn gully"...

I was picking through part of it and found several envelopes with the same address on them, with a penciled in remark that said "trash"...

Bingo...

My Grandfather and I drove straight into Quitman, to the sheriff's office and shown them the stuff...It all worked out in the end, and in the paper a few days later was the "crime report"...

The only thing in there was our "Illegal Dumping" claim with the report that the perpetrator was fined the maximum fee, and jailed for other outstanding offenses...

So yes, in small town I believe you should have provisions for reporting crimes of this nature, no matter how trivial...

Someone I knew had trash dumped on their lawn maliciously, and it contained mail addressed to the dumper. It was a neighbor who had a grudge against them.

It's amazing how stupid people can be.

OTOH, you could use another person's trash to frame him.

This is Austin posting under Russ' account since I am at his house.

"SO in my county maintains a separate file of who has CHL's. I don't know if they are supposed to do that, but ... "

The County's CHL population constitutes a ready-made pool of emergency deputies which the county judge could immediately call upon in an emergency.

Not that that is the reason.
