Daughter driving w/ permit - pulled over

My daughter has her learners permit. Sunday night, she was driving me on a few errands. We had just left a parking lot and I had not yet noticed her speed when we got lit up. On my future agenda for teaching her was to go over the procedures for getting pulled over. I was even going to do a mock drill. Well, we can now check that off of the list.

So, I had her pull into the HEB parking lot, put it in park, roll down her window, and turn the cabin light on. I told her to keep her hands on the wheel so the officer could see them, but as I was in the passenger seat (and of course was the only one carrying) I didn't know what to do with my hands. So I just kind left them on the top of my legs awkwardly.

He said he pulled us over for going 31 in a 20. He first took her permit and our insurance and then eventually asked for my ID as well. I handed my TDL and CHL over, he asked if I had the weapon on me to which I replied "Yes sir, I do". And that was about it.

He went to his car and came back and told her to take it slow and said "It's not always a good idea to go with the flow of traffic" - which she had been doing. I told him that I take responsibility because I should have been watching her speed better. He said it's not easy to see the speed from the passenger seat. I thanked him and told him it was a good lesson for both of us.

Great encounter and great learning opportunity ...

(Edited incorrect speed ...)

That woulda been a tough ticket for a student driver!
Glad you drew a nice cop.

I'm as guilty as anyone about not noticing speed limit changes, or just not paying attention and then realizing I was speeding enough to earn a citation.
One thing that has been helpful is a feature on my Tomtom GPS. It shows the current speed limits for each road, and sounds an audible note whenever I exceed the limit by whatever amount I specify.
It's been a money-saver on more than one occasion. Doesn't help with works zones or school zones, but they have their own attention-getters.

I use my cruise control routinely. 20-30-40-whatever the limit, I just set it on the cruise and hit resume as I pull out from a stop sign. 20 is kind of tough, because the CC doesn't want to engage below 20-MP so I'm usually doing 22 or so...

Another real example of a CHL helping to get you (and your daughter) a break... :thumbs2:
Thanks for sharing.

Oops, shoot. I just realized a typo. She was going 41 in a 30, not a 20. Hopefully I would have noticed (i.e. freaking out) if she was doubling the speed.

:iagree: Probably a good guess, since Alvin doesn't have an HEB. ;-)

Actually, it was in Alvin - we do have one. It's an older, very small HEB in the center of town. But given my own experiences with Friendswood PD, it was a good guess. :tiphat:

I must have blinked when I drove through Alvin.

WildBill was right. We don't really have a HEB in Alvin.

...nice officer...fair break...I especially like his advice: "It's not always a good idea to go with the flow of traffic."

Glad it wasn’t Shenandoah. A couple of years ago, my wife got a ticket for going 11 miles per hour over the speed limit on the access road, that cost over $200.00. :mad5

Hope they spend it well. We won’t even buy a candy bar in Shenandoah now. :nono:
