Never leave home without it.....

I was pulled over by Austin PD. last week. my hands on the wheel, I declare myself as a CHL holder and that I was armed. The young LEO asks me out of my car and then disarms me, and puts my P45 in my trunk. I give him proof of insurance and reach for my wallet.... Doh! I had left it at home. No liscence or CHL. He says "wait here" and goes to his cruiser. Comes back with a ticket and tells me that is a good idea to leave the gun in the trunk until I get home. I thought I was toast, about to be a victim of my own stupidity. I walked away with a moving violation when I was expecting asphalt to the face and a night in jail (and minus an expensive pistol and CHL). The lesson: I keep all carry items together, wallet, weapon, knife and phone.

You were not committing a UCW crime, You do not need a CHL to carry in the car.
Next time, ask the officer why you need to keep it in the trunk when TPC 46.02 Clearly states it is not a crime to carry one in a vehicle.
The only 'crime' you committed was failing to give the officer your CHL, which has absolutely no penalty.

He was operating a Motor Vehicle without his DL. I would panic too.

Thank you for your insight. The LEO was totally cool and friendly, so I returned the courtesy in kind and complied. I thought that once I stepped out of the car carrying a concealed weapon the rules changed (?)

Technically yes, however as he ordered you out, you did not get out on your own accord, it also helps you in that instance.

That's why you should memorize your DL# Like I have XD
Then when I forget it, I just tell them the number, and all is good.
Haven't had a problem with it yet.

I have never forgotten mine, so it would alarm me if I did. For more than one reason...

Reminds me of doing the old "Holy Cross" as you're going out the door: Spectacles, Something else, Wallet, and Watch (amended in respect of forum rules). Except now it's Spectacles, iPhone, Wallet, and Gun. Not quite the same mnemonic, but it's a goofy thing I do every time I go out the door.

Exactly, IKD! I now pat myself down as I leave: Wallet, weapon, knife, phone, glasses and keys. Good ritual to have!

I've started doing that as well. Keys, phone, voice recorder, wallet, knife, pistol, other pistol.

No problem with having to memorize my DL#. Waiting 51 days for plastic and signing on to the DPS site "frequently" to check status has my DL# etched in my brain forever.

Thanks for the post ... a good reminder for me to keep my 'essential' items on a check list somewhere near the door out of my home. Which reminds me to recommend the book "Checklist Manifesto: how to get things right" by Atul Gawande. Read it ... you won't be sorry.

I am sure there is a wide scope of technological prowess on this forum, but for those of you that have a camera phone, the best photo you can ever keep with you is a picture of your license and CHL. I have only had the opportunity to present this way once while boating, but in addition to giving the officer a chuckle, he was able to surmise the information he needed quickly so that we could both get on our way. Is it a replacement for carrying ID….of course not. Is it a reasonable back up….I think so.
