Whilst Wallking the Dog

Late one afternoon I was walking our dog (65lb poodle) through the walking trails in the green belt near our house. It was a pleasant afternoon and both the dog and I were enjoying the quiet and solitude.

My reverie was shattered by someone saying "good afternoon" from close behind me... I could not believe someone could sneak up on us so quietly. I turned and found one of the local polizi on a bicycle had coasted up behind me (I suspect this is a sort of bicycle cop joke) without being noticed.

Anyway, after jump-starting my pacemaker, we chatted for a few minutes... he turned out to be a nice young man.... finally he got ready to ride off...

REVENGE TIME!! I realized he didn't have a magazine in his Glunk. With an ever so bland expression I asked if his department had a policy prohibiting offciers from carrying magazines in their pistol. He immediately slapped his hand to the butt of his pistol... and sure enough no magazine. He muttered something about having to get going and rode away

A few minutes later I walked by his parked car and noticed him putting a magazine in his mag carrier (assume he had loaded a spare on the way to the car) and was replacing the one that had fallen out in his car in the carrier.

It sure was a good dog walk that day.... both of us got a laugh... just at different times.

Bet he was glad your name is Chuck & not Josie Wells. (Since I don't waste time watching movies that is the only name I know.) Have a good walk.

Good story. I'll bet your revelation scared the you know what out of him. He'll probably be a little extra checking on his equipment for a while. As LT said, it's a good thing that you are one of the good guys.

That's a great story Chuck!

I had something similar happen about a year ago. I went to lunch with a client and saw a Harris County Constable (can't recall which precinct) having lunch with a very nice looking young lady. I noticed he was carrying a 1911 with the mag clearly not seated. As I passed by, I leaned over an whispered "Your mag isn't fully seated."

He was startled and said "Er . . . it's a 10 round mag. I'm a firearms instructor for my department." I smiled, said "I’m an instructor too," and walked on to our table. He kept looking over at me and I knew what he was thinking. "Do I push the mag in while that guy's here, or do I wait until I leave." He finally pushed it in and never looked my way again.

We're all human and make silly mistakes.

Missing Mag? What About a Whole Missing Gun?

Those guys are all glad some nice citizen noticed and mentioned it before one of their brother officers -or worse, one of the brass saw it. You do something like that and another officer finds out you never hear the end of it.

I never left a mag out, but once I left the jail house after processing a BG and got a couple of miles down the road before I realized I left my gun in the lock box and had to go back for it. That would've been really embarrasing if I'd made it all the way to my next call that way.

You are absolutely right... remind me some day to tell you about an officer who got the nickname of "Crash" when he drove his black and white into a telephone poll while watching a VERY good looking woman.... :???:

The story in question happened in Flower Mound BTW... you may well know the officer... who will remain nameless.....
