From her tactical vantage point (at the other end of the house) she was belting out her unwavering orders to attack to our primary guard dog. Her actions reflect credit upon herself and he co-worker.

I've been in the a/c business for 35 years, been bit twice. Both times by a Chihuahua.

We have a little mix breed that tells our golden when to bark/attack.
Funny how that works out.

Those are great pictures of your "weapons of mass destruction with an attitude"! I hope they both get extra special biscuits for their bravery! Was your GSD cut by the glass?

When I was single I especially always made sure I had a BIG dog around. The intimidation factor is a big deterrent for keeping bg's at bay! I have a girlfriend at work who is single and lives with cats. I keep telling her to get a dog - she doesn't have to have a big one, even a little yappy one would help sound an alarm if someone were trying to break in - but she just isn't interested.

Our story isn't as dramatic - but was a little scary because our dog could have been hurt or hurt someone.

Last week we called to have our roof replaced. We came home one day and had a nice new roof on the house! We've been getting terrible rain storms here lately and roofers have been backed up with repair work. They did us a favor by working us in! It was such a relief to see they had been there.

We have a BIG GSD/Rott mix who stays in the house most of the time. We knew the roofers would be there sometime during the week, but didn't think a thing about how Lexi would react to them pounding away and cleaning up around the house when they were finished.

After we drove up and saw the work had been done, we were happily walking into the house when we saw the blinds were torn down from the window and in a crumpled heap in the living room. I'm only guessing but she must have gone ballistic over those roofers being there. We only have old aluminum, single pane windows.

I was even more grateful - we had a new roof and she didn't break any glass to hurt herself (or them). Our sweet Lexi, was just making sure those big mean roofers didn't get in!

Had an attempted break in today. Went to the movies and returned about 3 hours later to be greeted my my German Shepherd. She was acting all hyper and when I rubbed under her chin, my hand came up bloody. I drew my pistol and backed out from where I came and called the police. Their response was pretty quick and I handed over my CHL/ID to the responding officer who replied with an "Ok, cool....".

What, you mean to say you didn't immediately charge into the house and start clearing it room by room. What would Rambo think

Congrats on an intelligent response and I'm glad the biological alarms are fine...

Y'know.....I have to give credit to the forum for this move. I definitely would have moved in and cleared it myself had I not started reading this forum. I've learned quite a bit about my responsibilities carrying a weapon and the possible dangers and consequences of my actions. I had my 3 kids with me and I could only think of their safety. My first thought was "There's possibly something dangerous in there!" (other than my dog) I didn't know what was going on, but there was a reason she was bleeding and I wasn't going to be the one to go in and find out. I secured the dog just before the officer went in. (FYI, dog blood dries black and is easily cleaned up afterward)

Huge learning experience here, people.........Luckily, I did everything right the first time. Took some explaining to my kids, though. Dad, why is your gun out? was the first question I had. Then came, why is Tabyr bleeding? It's heart wrenching to have to see your kids go through that and I've gone thorugh several stages of emotion since. Since the incident we've gotten a security system (ADT) and we did wind up giving both dogs their own T-Bone this weekend. (man, has the cost of meat gone up!) I stepped up the training on our GSD and now every time we get home, she goes through and checks every room and comes back to me and sits. Helps out the wife, that's for sure.

On a side note, if anyone is considering a dog, I highly suggest buying a German Shepherd. Not only is she the most loyal dog we've ever had, she's excellent with kids (very protective) and is obviously a perfect choice for a home protector. She's great at the dog parks and I wouldn't trade her for any other dog in the world. (chihuahua is up for grabs...lol....little medical nightmares) Anyway, they range in price from $200ish up in the thousands. Ours is an "American" Shepherd and will get a little larger than the pure German bloodlines. Right now, she's 75lbs but we expect her to get up around 80ish tops. She's also a bit taller, though. The Germans get around 60-70lbs average. I think the Germans have a better disposition but both are simply awesome.

Since the incident we've gotten a security system (ADT) ...

We have a monitored alarm system. The biggest value (IMO) is that when I come home and open the door, the beep tells me that no one has been in the house.

I can also set it to go off if someone opens the door while we're inside.

If you're handy with tools and have the time, you can install your own system from Radio Shack and dispense with the monitoring (which costs around $30 a month) or get a gizmo that calls your pager or cell phone when the alarm goes off.
