I think he meant that the 61st (and all subsequent) person to renew each year gets the lower rate.

Who would have thought that? Geeze, links to the text of the bills are posted several places include in this thread.

So to clarify - the renewal fee for those people who ore over 60 years of age is $35. That remains unchanged from prior to this bill.

Not sure that will make that big of an impact, personally.

If you can't afford what amounts to few boxes of plinking ammo to practice with, or to barely buy a HiPoint , then I'm just not sure about that.

You want to make it about money impact, then just charge $1 for LTC or even better, everyone with LTC gets $140/year voucher to be redeemed at you local gun dealer.

Boost for me, local economy, Libs are ticked off...life is good!

I agree. I think the cost of the license is an excuse not the real reason. Maybe I'm wrong but if $2.50 per month is their reason for not getting a LTC, and they don't qualify for the indigent discount, I will be surprised.

I agree the license cost is too high. It should never have been a money maker for the general fund. In principle it should cost the same as voter registration or a library card, but lowering the fee doesn't change that principle.

I made this point a couple years ago to a college student who posted about the cost and couldn't qualify for the indigent discount. And i got attacked for it. If you can't come up with the $140 then you really should focus on other priorities before getting a gun.

i'm glad they lowered the fee and think it makes sense. It shouldn't cost more than a drivers license, but that doesn't mean the world owes everyone a car.

Does anybody know the approximate total administrative cost of producing a LTC? You have the registration, the cost of staff to do the background checks, telephone customer service, and of course the fingerprinting/photo work, which is typically contracted out.

SECTION 6. Section 411.195, Government Code, is amended to read as follows:
Sec. 411.195. REDUCTION OF CERTAIN FEES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS. Notwithstanding any other provision of this subchapter, if an applicant for the license is 60 years of age or older, the department shall reduce by:
(1) 50 percent any fee required for the issuance of a duplicate or modified license under this subchapter; and
(2) $5 any fee required for the issuance of a renewed license under this subchapter [if the applicant for the license is 60 years of age or older].
