Straus Sending Ominous Message on Campus-Carry

#1

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

If the Chron.com article is accurate, then Speaker Straus may be preparing Texas gun owners for some underhanded treatment of campus-carry. Remember House Members, we have a record of who voted for Straus.

If Admiral McRaven feels Texas CHLs are less responsible than the people who can carry handgun on 1,500 campuses around the country, I'd very interested to hear the factual evidence on which he bases that preposterous opinion.

Chas.
Chronicle/Speaker Joe Straus wrote:"I would caution anyone who intends to ignore Admiral McRaven when you're talking about arms and ammunition," Straus told the Chronicle later Wednesday, in a clarification of his earlier remarks.

McRaven, the former head of U.S. Special Operations Command, has been outspoken in his opposition to campus carry. However, the speaker said did not think anything has changed politically in the House since last session, when a campus carry provision that included an opt-out clause passed. http://www.chron.com/news/politics/texa ... 075901.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My rep also supported Strauss. I'll be reminding him of that from now until the next election.

I have a lot of respect for McRaven but I am really scratching my head at his opinion on this matter.

Let's not go after any Representatives just yet. If campus-carry stalls in the House, a Call-To-Action will be issued.

Hopefully I will have a representative by then. The election is next Tuesday.

Having been in and around the military all of my life, I can tell you from 60+ years of experience that most senior officers of any branch of the military are not in favor of "common people" carrying firearms, only uniformed military and police. The fact that a retired Admiral (McRaven) is against campus carry does not surprise me in the least. Just look at some of the knee jerk reactions the miltary has taken or attempted regarding the small number of shootings (not to demean the horrific nature of them) on military installations. Appx 15 years ago, they tried to force all service members on Ft Hood to register all of the firearms they owned regardless of the location of the firearm on or off post. This was quickly overridden and only those firearms which were stored or brought on-post were required to be registered. Now, following the most recent Ft Hood incident, one of the recommendations was that everyone, regardless of rank (to include the Commanding General?) would be required to have their commander's approval to register a firearm on post AND they are revisiting the requirement to register ALL firearms owned whether on-post, off-post or back at your permanent address with family. This time they are trying to slip the requirement into the National Defense Authorization Act so that it will "a law," not just a military regulation.

Senior military leaders are about control of their subordinates. Some dumb 19 year old private gets drunk, jumps on a motorcycle and turns himself into an organ donor and the first thing that happens is everyone in the chain of command is scrutinized as to "how much motor cycle training had the Soldier completed," "why didn't the 1st Sergeant inspect his motor cycle," "why did the Platoon Leader not give him a weekend safety briefing, have the Soldier initial it and Platoon Leader sign it." Have two or three of these incidents or practically ANY incident involving a firearm and heads roll in the chain of command....

McRaven being against campus carry is perfectly in character for flag officers.

It's standard military SOP to not trust the troops to be armed unless they're in combat, so he doesn't trust the citizens either.

Maybe he thinks he will get fragged.

My rep voted for Strauss........after having campaigned on unseating Strauss. I'm so mad at him I want to just shake him and ask what was he thinking.

I won't waste an "I told you so" yet, my rep voted against Strauss. He was one of the few up here that did. Respectfully, from the beginning I have thought the "record vote" is overblown, but I guess we may get to find out.
