I was going to answer, until you said affordable. I like my Crossbreed Belt, but with the Velcro it was $85 or so if I remember right.

under $100 you have lots of great choices. I personally prefer http://www.thebeltman.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - his bullhide belts are great. Even without a kydex insert they hold up your pants and gun very well.

A good belt for the money is 5.11 Tactical - both the Operator 1.75" width web belt (with kydex insert) and the leather belts with kydex insert work very well. Not as "pretty" or well made as Beltman, but they do they job for about 1/3rd the price.

What would you recommend on belt stiffness? 3 stitch, 5 stitch, or polymer lined?

5 stich is the lowest stiffness I like.

dessl, when you finally do get a proper gun belt, you're going to be amazed at the difference it makes.

Mine is a 5 stitch, and that seems to be more than adequate; and it is at least as stiff as the leather gun belt I bought from D.M. Bullard. I have a problem with chronic back pain. Like anyone who carries a gun, I need a belt stiff enough to support the gun's weight. But, if the belt is too stiff, it causes me a lot of pain, and then I can't bear to wear it. The 5 stitch belt meets my needs, but maybe not yours. I am able to carry a full-sized steel-framed 1911 OWB with a double mag carrier on the other side, and the belt doesn't sag any more than any other gun belt. But adding the polymer insert would make it more useful for duty carry with other objects like flashlight and handcuffs. So it would depend on your needs, but I do think that making it too stiff will also make it uncomfortable.

Although I'm a sucker for custom/semi-custom stuff (Beltman, etc.)

5.11 makes a good off-the rack holster-belt for about $35.00 in styles that are suitable (not ideal) for suit & tie wear....here in Houston Top Brass (Army-Navy store) has 'em in stock...

Uncle Mike's sells a copy of the Wilderness Instructors Belt with polymer reinforcement. It can be had for $23.95 from Amazon.com (it would cost $49.95 from Wilderness). I just got mine a week ago and I'm very pleased with it.

Is this the one?

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Does it seems as well made as the Wilderness? Is the buckle as strong? stitching?
