IWB Holster

#1

Post by peppergat »

I recently purchased an Protuck IWB holster for my XD 45 Tactical and , well , its pretty uncomfortable . The price was right and waitt was not long so , I figured I would go for it . I have tried to wear it at 3 o'clock all the way aroung to about 5:30 ish and , I cant seem to find a spot that it just melts into me , this thing keeps pulling my breaches down , my underwear down , it just gets to where it sucks . I keep reading all the rave reviews on CompTac holster's . I guess I really wanted to find out if these really are better or , Im just a little too fat to try and tote around this huge weapon . I do love my XD though . I have an LCP I can carry in my pocket , I would just rather carry my XD . I just wanted to hear more before I dropped more money on another holster . BTW , I am about 5'11 and I weigh about 215 .

I'm betting you are not using a comptac (or any other brand) double layered, kydex reinforced gun belt http://www.comp-tac.com/product_info.ph ... vegpe00il5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But, if you are, .... try a different holster.

I'm not familiar with
Protuck IWB holster
so I searched and it appears top be a generic hybrid with 2 clips similar to most others.

I rarely wear two clip holsters anymore, but comptac, crossbreed, kholster are popular, I own a few kholsters and a comfortcarry (by rob durham) THE COMFORT CARRY WAS LESS COMFORTABLE (STIFF) BUT SHOULD LAST FOREVER (IT'S double layered holster leather, but RARELY WORN) The Kholster was comfortable, but I liked CompTac belt clips better.

SINCE I ordered my comptac belt with VELCRO sewn in ...
I usually wear a single clip Desantis Tuick This 2, which I added the Sticky Back Velcro onto the single clip.
I use that for XD45 service model (with spare mag and Glock 26/19 with spare mag.
I love it, but it's personal preference, some might not like single J clip
Honestly, you need to open the J a bit with pliers to fit the thick thick belt.

No , Its not a top name gun belt , Those bad boys are higher than ...... well , they are expensive . I just have a hard time spending a lot on something I may not like . I cant wear it all day , only before and after work . I have been looking also at the Comp Tac Infedel holster with the belt loops . Similar to the Baldetech IWB holster and , about the same price but , same problem , what if it dosent work ant better ? Then I have another in the gun cabinet . This whole conceal carry thing sure can get expensive .

I'm too finding out that it can be expensive experimenting with what is going to end up working best. I've already spent a ton of money on this whole concealed thing, but I know eventually that I will get the right combination that is going to work and will be my semi-permanent solution to EDC. I have a new holster that should be showing up in the mail tomorrow to go with the new smaller lighter weight handgun that I just purchased this past weekend. I haven't even tried IWB yet, I'm still experimenting with OWB. I don't beieve that IWB would work for me as I am 5'11'' weighing in at 240. It does seem with my build that IWB would be just too uncomfortable as you say that you are discovering.

I am starting to feel the same way . I think I am goingto look into OWB holsters . I actually have a Blackhawk Serpa OWB holster that I have been wearing around the house , it stays where I put it and , I love how easy it is to draw and reholster , its just not easily concealed unless I wear coat or something . Like I said before , I have a pocket weapon , I just wanna carry my Big one . Let Me know how the new set up works for You .

Men are shaped differently, and on occasion you may find that your the person that just doesn't easily wear a gun on your belt. There are other options:

1. Use a pair of suspenders, they will help. I never have worn them, but I know that there are a few on here who swear by then.

2. Belly Band.... I do have a smart carry.. and it works well

3. Shoulder Holster

When assessing possibilities for carry, I did a lot of reading on this forum and others. Two IWB holsters consistently got good reviews from almost everyone -- the CompTac M-Tac and the CrossBreed SuperTuck - $70 to $90 each. In more recent days I have seen predominantly positive reviews of a few others such as the Galco KingTuk and even the Kholster, which is significantly less expensive at around $40. A quality gunbelt is a huge part of making the package work effectively and comfortably.

Based on the reading I did, I purchased a CompTac M-Tac and a Comp-Tac Kydex reinforced belt as my first combo and I haven't looked back. All day, every day comfort and very discrete. Since then, I have also purchased a gunbelt from AG Gunleather, and can highly recommend them as well. Neither the Comp-Tac Belt nor the AG Gunleather belt are inexpensive, but I am convinced that they are well worth the cost.

I guess what I am getting to is the old axiom, Buy quality and buy once, buy cheap and ??? Seems a hard pill to swallow at over $100 for holster and belt, but that still seems better to me than spending $40 - $60 per combo, then doing it again and again. YMMV of course.

I started on the concealed carry journey about 4 years ago. I have a Taurus PT145 that I wanted to carry. I found a cheap Galco IWB holster and found it as comfortable as wearing a brick in my waistband. I have friend that does leather work and he wanted to try his hand at holsters and built me a shoulder rig that I ended up using for about a year. It was very comfortable and concealable because I wear button down shirts most of the time.

I then found a Crossbreed Supertuck used for about 1/2 price of a new one and loved it. I wore it with a Double Duty belt from Cabela's. This spring, I bought a used Kimber and decided to go all out and get a new SBST in horsehide along with a gun belt and a dress belt with velcro.

So you see, I too have a drawer full of holsters, some well used, some not. It takes a while to figure out what works best for you. It has taken me 4 years to get to the point where I am satisfied with my carry method. I am also a large guy, 6'1" and about 275.

I bought a Crossbreed belt about 2 years ago, an all leather "gun belt" but wasn't rigid enough - a bad $90 spent.
Then I came across Blackhawk belts, for $30, super rigid and do a great job with my Springfield XD9sc, 16+1.

Take a look, give them a try

I've worn my CompTac belt since 2008 every day, still stiff as new (kydex reinforced tends to stay stiff where leather can soften faster than Kydex, over time)

My dad used to work in a Saddlery shop making boots in the 1940s with a famous bootmaker in Lubbock, I made leather items for hippies in the 1960s/70s ... I always made my own belts, until I bought a CompTac belt ... I admit when someone does better work than I do. Honestly, I wouldn't try to make a double layered Kydex reinforced belt with Velcro sewn in ... too much work, it's worth their price, and I have lots of tools and leather.

I'm pretty sure it isn't supposed to go inside your underwear.
