Stop by the Lighthound store in Pearland. It is well worth the time. They have a huge selection in the price range you are looking at. They also get a lot of feedback from the field on the light characeristics.

Are you looking for a tactical light? One strategy is to have a small general purpose light with a long runtime, and a light that's 100 or so lumens for tactical use.

I just purchased the Fenix LD20.

205 Lumens at 2 hours on 2 AA batteries. That's pretty awesome.

I would recommend the Fenix PD30.

Bought one in May from Amazon and have used it daily since without a need to replace the batteries yet. Also bought a 12 pack of batteries!

A few features of the light are:

I have an Olight T20 Tactical and love it. Got it from Battery Junction.

Super bright, great even light pattern (no dark spots in pattern), 3 brightness levels with the twist of the head, and strobe feature. I got 2 sets of rechargeable CR123 batteries for it with the charger and have never had a problem with running the light down before the other set was charged, even on the highest setting. The light DOES get hot on the high setting. Those CREE LEDs do put off some heat.

That's a great light. The competition in this field from quality manufacturers has gotten intense, and it's driving the prices of high performance units way down - good news for us.

Don't get the one from 5.11 tactical. Too many bad reviews and they aren't all they are hyped up to be. Go with surefire or streamlight. Lithium batteries are more expensive but the quality and customer service that surefire offers is the best out there. I've only had one problem with an old light from them and the part was being sent before i could even finish describing it.

My vote is for the Pelican flashlights,,they are tough, last a long time and some still use good old fashioned AA batteries

Someone mentioned the Pelican flashlights. I don't recall the particular model that I had, but we had several issued to us during my last rotation overseas and the push button on the bottom failed on the majority of them. I don't know if that has been addressed by the manufacturer or if it was a bad lot, but just something to be aware of.

On another note, I use an inova x1 I purchased in Kuwait and love it. Not the best, but it's lasted two years and works great on 1AA.

I am a fan of Surefire. I carry a Surefire Z2L with me just about everywhere. I like knowing that I have a reliable and bright light with me everywhere. I recommend an LED light highly.

AAA batteries are about $10 for 16...at Home Dippy...bright idea....

...I also bought the Coast light you'll see there...not nearly as bright nor reliable...had to send off for parts early on...
