Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC Holster Review - 1yr Update
Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC Holster Review
I know I said I was going to do this along time ago but I'm just now getting around to it. This review is for the new MTAC from Comp-Tac. I got the C-clips for mine. Best investment I have made holster wise.
First the customer service from Comp-Tac is really good. I ordered it on a Monday night around midnight. Got an e-mail from them the next morning about 9AM that it was being made and would take about a week to 10 days for that step. About 4 hours later I got my second e-mail stating that it had been made and that it was being sent to the shipping department. This was on a Tuesday. It was in my mail box on Friday afternoon. I live about 20 miles east of Dallas so that might have take it an extra day. Had a personal message to enjoy the holster and return it if I had any problem. Got the heart the smiley face and all.
Right out of the package it felt great. Took about a day to find the sweet spot for me. Adjusting it was simple and pretty straight forward.
I have been wearing it for over a month now and I would recommend this holster to anyone looking for a IWB holster. Here are a few points of interest.
1. With this holster on I have shot an IDPA match in it and placed 2nd in un-classed shooters. Even beat a Marksman in over all time.
2. I have put this holster on while sitting in the passenger seat of a moving car.
3. Gotten in and out of all my cars and have not ever felt it.
4. Chased down my dog one day when she got out. (She's fast too, Specially when she saw the cat.) Holster and pistol never moved.
5. Crawled around a roof top hanging Christmas lights.
6. Can re-holster with one hand. Some others say they have problems. I found it easy to do.
But here is the kicker. The other day my wife and I went and took our son to a Christmas carnival and they boasted the largest inflatable slide in the world. Weather it is or not I have no idea. Of course my son wanted to go and at first I thought I would get away with letting my wife take him down but after that he still wanted me to take him. So we go stand in line and I hand my wallet and keys and stuff to my wife and make the climb up this inflatable slide with my son under one arm cause he was having difficulty with all the bouncing around. All the way up I had thoughts of something going wrong and shooting a hole thought the darn thing or flashing the a crowd of people and the police tent that just happen to be right at the bottom of the slide. But I still did it. I sat down and placed my son so I could hold him in front of me. The attendant pushed me from behind and I thought for sure he was going to feel it. Never did. Slid down the slide and the holster and pistol stayed there. No ND/AD no flashing no S.W.A.T. team being called for a mad man with a gun on the thing. Met my wife at the bottom and put my shoes back on and collected my wallet ,keys and other stuff from her and went on my way. Wore the holster the rest of the day and didn't even have to adjust it any reason.
And just in case you don't know this is all done with a Beretta 92FS. If I can do it with that monster of a pistol it can be done with any pistol. I hope this has helped anyone looking for a new holster either add one to the list or at least consider a new alternative. Another bonus for this holster is the flexibility of it. If you decide you like this platform and want to use it for several pistols just send 30 bucks to Comp-Tac and they will send you a new shell to use with the different firearm. Like to see ya do that with a VMII or a Tucker.
Over all score A+. I have not found anything I don't like about it.
I will say this. It's a holster. Yes its going to affect the finish. ALL holsters do. This one is no different. I didn't buy my pistol to be a holster queen.

This one is just me sitting here at the computer desk. I would normally have a cover shirt over it or just pull the shirt down over it but I wanted to show yall how it looks sitting down.
And this is a pic of all the other junk that I carry with me.
----December 12, 2008----
One year update.
Here is a small update for this holster. After wearing this holster for over a year I can only say its gotten better that when I first got it. I have not had to try the swappable body frames but the post below does have one person experience with them. Please read.
MTAC multi gun holster review..
----March 11, 2010----
2.3 year update.
I know this update is a little late. Just been busy. Here is a another small update for this holster. This holster just gets better with age. I have heard stories of people having a draw full of Holsters that didn't work or didn't live up to the hype. I can honestly say that I only have 2 holsters. This one and another from Comp-Tac that I only use for IDPA. Great holster from a Great company. And I know I have said it before but Ill say it again. If this holster can hide a Beretta 92FS it will hide anything.

Wildscar,
Thank you for posting this. I've been waiting for someone to post a review with some real life aspects to it. Any holster will work with a parka over it, standing in front of a mirror.
I've always been a Milt Sparks SS/SSII fan, but the wait is going to prevent my buying another for my current needs.
A few of questions if I may.
How is the fit/retention ? Is the gun stable when you're moving around ? The Kydex/leather combo left me wondering if the Kydex being so slick, might compromise retention.
How do you like the C-clips ? Have you tried the J clips ? The std clips ?
Any 'wear in' time, how long did it take for the rig to be acceptably comfortable ?
I know the last question is subjective, but I'm used to my carry rig being on me and not being any distraction whatsoever. I'm hoping the Minotaur is the same.
After carrying this rig for a while, any recommendations ?
Thanks again for the first class, real world, *useable* review.

If I take the holster and hold it in my hand and turn it upside down the Pistol will fall out. While wearing it however I can bend over and touch my toes and its stays put. The belt is part of the retention.

I also have a set of the Standard clips and I feel the C clips are better becasue they come over the pants and back down between the pants and belt and hold to the belt. With those you will never have to worry about the holster comming out with the pistol.

If I had to put a time on that I would say about a day or two and thats just to figure out the postion that works for you. I know now they are being shipped with new clips that have more holes. That makes for alot more choices. As for the comfort that was never an issue. It was comfortable the first time I put it on.

I should have put a picture of the back side. There is a part where the rough side of the leather is placed so that thegrain is pointed down. It helps to keep the hoslster from sliding down. With my previous holster I was constantly having to readjust. With this one I put it on and bascially forget about it.
After carrying this rig for a while, any recommendations ?
It may not be combat tested but I feel that I have atleast real world tested and it works for me. Everyone is diffrent. If anyone is still on the fence about it let me know Ill see if I can set up a meeting at the range or something and let yall try it on.

Any time.

Wildscar,
Thanks for the review, very nice. I have a Comp-Tac C-TAC now, and I like it very much, but I have had my eye on the Minotaur for the next holster.
For .45Carrier: As noted above, I have a C-TAC, which seems to be very nearly the same as the Minotaur except for the leather backer. The C-TAC does not have that large, once piece backer, just two leather tabs that the clips are attached to. Thus I think the retention and mounting clips would be very similar.
I I have worn the C-TAC for a year now, and it has worked very well. Holds my Browning Hi Power very securely, and I have done some rough stuff with it, rolled around on the ground, and so forth. I usually wear it as a tuckable holster, and it does well.
I use V-clips, the velcro ones. Not only do I find them much more concealable than the others, they are much more secure as well. Once the velcro is meshed and you buckle your belt, the holster ain't moving. The V-Clips work better with belts of different widths as well.
Wildscar, thanks again for the excellent review.

Wildscar,
Thanks for your helpful review. I just ordered this same holster - with the C-clips, per your recommendation - for my Beretta M9 (92 FS) last night. (As I may have mentioned to you previously, I currently carry my M9 with an OWB Kydex paddle holster). One question: does the holster have adjustment screws for retention purposes?
Thanks!

I have been using this holster with a HK USPc for the last couple months. It is very comfortable, and gets better with use. I have both the C clips and the standard clips. They both work. The standard clips hold everything in place better, but the C clips are a little more discreet. If I plan to tuck stuff in, I use the C clips, otherwise the standards work better for me.
Price is good, turnaround time is good, fit is good, retention is good. It may seem a little loose at first, but the leather bends to fit your body and the belt adds pressure from the outside. Nothing moves unless you want it to.
I can't think of any way this holster could be better, I would recommend it to anyone. They even send you a little candy with your order.

Re: Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC Holster Review
I picked up the Minotaur shortly after it was announced on this board in August. I've been very pleased with the holster as a tuckable. However, I found I was getting irritation on my flank from the grip of the gun (Glock 23) rubbing against my skin where the holster doesn't cover it. I don't like wearing undershirts (it's hot enough with just one shirt!). I went looking for solutions and came across the AGRIP from Brooks Tactical http://www.brookstactical.com/.
The Agrip is a rubber-like material that feels like suede that is adhesive backed and wraps around the grip of the gun. It gives the grip a soft feel without being mushy. It's very thin and doesn't add much to the diameter of the grip. It is supposed to have excellent gripping capability when wet or sweaty and is resistant to gun oils.
I just put it on over the weekend and wore it in my Minotaur for a long day yesterday. I had no irritation or chafing at all from the Agrip against my skin. I would recommend the Agrip if you're having a similar problem with your tuckable holster.

I used Agrip for years on my gun. It is great!
