I have my CHL now and I am wondering what I can do to move to the next level?
OK by that I mean training for Security level or Body Guard, Private Investigator, or reserve LEO, what can one do to go to a higher level and where do you go to take the classes.
I am to old to be a LEO or most other fields of Law enforcement full time and health issues so what can one do after the CHL?
How does one go about getting commissioned to do more?

Sorry if these questions seem dumb but I don't know so I am asking for me and anyone else that might care.

A Concealed Handgun License and any type of law enforcement (or security) are very different animals. If you aspire to any of these vocations, that's great, but I would definitely not think of them as a progression from CHL.

From time to time we hear about stories where a CHL runs into a mix of LEO and criminal trying to 'help'. Almost universally, that is a very bad idea. Your post has that ring to it. Maybe I read you wrong...

Well no at 57 years of age I don't think I have any intentions of running in between LEO and bad guys.

My thought was along the lines of making a little money doing private work and educating myself along the way.

I hope I never ever need to use my weapons but if I can make money and learn more while staying legal then why not?

Doug - if you want to get into security, you need to PM txinvestigator.

He is the one in the know about that sort of thing.

I don't consider job training to be a "different level" from having your CHL. There are "professionals" with notoriously poor gun skills, and there are "amateurs" with nothing more than a CHL who are outstanding.

Join and club and start practical shooting competitions.

I have to agree with Kevin. Most LEO's, as well as security personel only shoot whenthey have to qualify. This amounts to 2-6 times a year depending on the department.

On the other hand, most of the CHL holders I know practice 2-4 times a month or more.

You can't make much money unless you go pro, but the competition is the route I would suggest as well.

I just finished a Defensive Handgun class taught by Glenn Matthews from Suarez International.

Two full days of marksmanship, draw from the holster, clearing malfunctions, reloading, engaging multiple adversaries, and movement.

Eight of us in the class. Ages ranged from 18 to over sixty. At 49, I was second oldest.

I highly recommend the class and Glenn as an instructor.

I know this has been mentioned elswhere, but John Farnam's Defense Training International (http://defense-training.com/) makes its twice-yearly stop in Texas (Victoria) this coming October for courses in Basic/Intermediate Defensive Handgun, Advanced Defensive Handgun, and Defensive Shotgun. The classes usually fill up quickly, so I don't know if any spots remain, but if you're interested I'd recommend visiting their Website and contacting them to check.
