It's been my experience that now matter how earth shattering and illuminating training like this is, if you don't practice the skills, you will lose them. I would be much more inclined to go after training like this if we could form a type of sparring group that would agree to meet periodically and refresh the techniques learned in training like this. Is anyone interested in that sort of thing in the Houston area?

I will be the first to say that Martial Arts, Self Defense, Sports/Recreation, etc...."skills" are perishable. If you want to maximize the benefits of your learning, then by all means practice.

The purpose of holding seminars is to teach those with no training... some potentially life saving techniques. Those with prior training will learn things that can augment what they already know.

It will be everyones responsibility to take this information and practice it to the degree necessary for them to apply it (varies from person to person).

Ideally, you want some self defense skills that are committed to "muscle memory", but even this can get you into trouble. We do not teach "If he does A, you do B". We teach a variety of techniques that follow proven principles and concepts. This gives the student a number of "tools" to choose from and allows them to apply the skills as needed.

One of the most common objections to learning Martial/Self defense skills is just what you stated: "If you don't use it , you lose it". Certainly, there is an element of truth to that. I am more convinced that skills are "perishable or degradable". One thing is undeniable though, "If you never learn it, you can't use it".

Yes, you would do well to continue to practice the things you learn if you want to stay as sharp as possible. I think it is a great idea for you guys that are relatively close together.. to assemble and share your knowledge while practicing your newly found skills.

I like to work the principles and concepts into "muscle memory" and have plan a, plan b, and plan c ....ie.... stay on your feet, if that fails, don't get mounted and so on.

I'd also say ALL skills are perishable, they don't dissapear overnight, they sort of fade. Maintaining them usually doesn't take a lot of time.

Looks like a rainy weekend up here.

All seminar students please drive carefully and allow extra time for travel.

Remember: Do not speed through Corrigan or Dibol.

If you need any instructions when you get to Nacogdoches, call the Dojo @ 936-569-0708 and we'll send someone to meet you.

Have a safe trip and we look forward to seeing you.

Seminar done!

A big thanks to all who made the drive to "the oldest town in Texas" to attend the seminar.

Also, to Charles for allowing this to remain a "sticky" which allowed us a means of communication by which to arrange things.

I could not be prouder of our "CHL" group. As expected, they were a great group of guys, and good students as well. Our instructors were pleased with the attitudes displayed and the willingness to learn. TexasCHLforum was very well represented.

Of course...its always great to have an opportunity to put a "face" with a name. You couldn't ask for a more "easy going" group, and I look forward to visiting you guys on your home turf sometime.

I hope everyone learned something today...and that with practice, you feel like you can apply those skills if needed. You can expect to have sore wrists for a few days, but if we don't demonstrate the "locks" you won't have confidence that they work. Everyone was a trooper, I didn't see a single incidence of whining or whimpering.

Some in the group (read..El Gato), already had quite a few solid techniques in their tool box, others were seeing this for the first time. All, watched carefully, asked intelligent questions...and then put the principles to practice.

I know we threw a lot at you guys...and we don't expect it all to "stick", but if you'll practice some of the basic principles of economy of motion, using larger muscle groups against smaller, moving off line, etc...it will all become second nature to you.

I sincerely mean what I am about to say next: Man for Man we have not had such a pleasant group of people to work with in quite some time. Everyone worked hard and did very well for a "first time". My hat is off to you guys!!!

Flint.

Flint-

It was an honor to spend the day with you folks. The caliber of people I have met from this forum contintues to be among the highest I have ever been exposed to! Thank you for your efforts in making this happen. Please send our sincere thanks to Eugene, Adam and everyone else involved in gently kicking our tails today

We left the seminar with a great deal of information. I had no idea how little I knew and how much I HAVE to learn about the offense and defense of a knife. It is common to hear about how brutal a knife can be and I witnessed this working in the prison, but it was amazing to see what someone is capable of with some training and experience. The speed associated with some of these tactics is absolutely amazing.

The format and staff were wonderful and I would not think twice about sending someone I loved there to learn self defense. Very straight forward and practical.

We left the training and attended church with Longtooth.....what a wonderful way to cap off the evening. SUPER fellow. Thank you for welcoming us into your church with open arms. It was wonderful to shake your had and worship together.

I am limping off to bed with a smile on my face..what a great day! I like it.

We are all friends from the forum & have been for a WHILE. The welcome you received inside those doors is the way that church welcomes visitors. Many came to welcome you while I was w/ someone else. Think I only personally entroduced yall to 2 gentlemen & Mom. All the rest just showed the character & care that is inside their heart.
See yall in print. Next time we get together it should be at a :fire
Great time here too.

Like Jason and Tom had already mentioned. The siminar was wonderful. Eugene, John, and everyone else has a sea of knowledge. I wish I could download all this knowledge from you guys in knife defense as well as all the martial arts into my brain just like the Matrix. I will definitely be coming back for more visits when you offer more classes.
Longtooth is a super guy. He welcomes us into his church, fed us, then send us off with prayers of our friends here and us making it home safe from all this nasty weather. It was a great day overall. Hopefully I'll see you guys out there again soon.

Thank You Flint

I have to look to the younger generation for a word to describe yesterday, AWESOME! Even more so the day after when I have had time to reflect on it.

Let me see where to start, first, you have all heard about the guy who could go bear hunting with a switch, Flintnapper could take him and the bear at the same time! What was it Walter used to say ''no brag, just fact ''

Ya'll know by now when I write something it's usually short and sweet and without much window dressing, kinda like me, plain. This shouldn't be like that, I wish I had the word's to describe the Art's that I saw yesterday, all I can think of are VERY FAST and DEVISTATING. I didn't see any choreography or acrobatics, they weren't dancing, the take down's and throw's were to get away from severe pain or to keep from breaking something and they were taking it easy, it was obvious that bone's could have been broken. :ack: Thank God they didn't ask the old man to do the take down's, I got to just go through the motion's, slooow-motion.

Kenny, Jason and I decided on the way home that we needed to get in shape [ as in able to RUN FASTER ] :willynilly: and to get faster with our gun's. :fire

Thank's again Flint and tell Eugene again I was seriously impressed.

As for stopping bye to see LT, we had a great time, a really good Texas Style Church Meeting with lot's of music and singing [ the old Traditional Hymn's that I like ] Good People who came to Worship and LT is dedicated and proud of his service, the growth of his new Church and it's Membership.
I have to testify that it was meant for us to stay for the Service and as usual the Sermon was preached just for me, looked right at me and told me that I had an enemy that I needed to forgive, so I did.
Just before we left those of us on the forum got in a huddle and LT led us in a Special Prayer for one of our own and his family.

Thank's LT, you are a friend.

This is more typing than I have done since the forum began but I can't end without saying that traveling with Kenny and Jason topped off an overall great experience, they took good care of ole Pop and even the travel part was fun.

Thank's Boy's

To the forum Member's, we have some really good people here on the forum, get out and shoot with and meet all of them you can in person, I guarantee it will be worth your while.

Good day fellars...

I am one of flintknapper's instructors. I was not able to be there for Eugene's clinic, and sounds like I missed out.

I am writing to ask permission to use some of your kind words posted here in our next newsletter, that I am currently working on.

I won't be using any screen names, or real names for that matter. Just a few select quotes from those of you that posted to this thread.

So whoever is the head honcho around here... Let me know if it's a thumbs up... or thumbs down....

Thanks...
