Do these two dates comprise one class? Or is the 11/18/06 a stand alone class?

The two sessions make up one class. The first (Friday) will be roughly 3 hours or so, totally classroom. The second (Saturday) will be 7 or 8 hours, partly classroom and partly range. We split it into 2 days to give us more range time.

As of right now, to the best of my knowledge, NRA is early in the process of getting instructors qualified. I have no idea when it will be available for the general public, but it will probably be at least a few months. Charles may have a better handle on it.

I'm going to NRA HQ from Dec. 1st through 4th for a Finance Committee Budget meeting and to get certified to teach the Personal Protection Outside the Home class. Marc and I will schedule a class soon after that.

I've gone through the student manual for that course and I have to say the NRA training division did a very good job. I'm looking forward to teaching this new course and I think it is going to be very well received.

Charles is not a Training Counselor, but I am. Unfortunately I can't do a PPO Instructor class until I get it, and I'm not sure when that will be.

The first step in the process is to take what is called "Basic Instructor Training". It is a prerequisite for all of the discipline classes (rifle, pistol, etc.). If you take it, it is good for a year ... which means you can take any of the discipline classes within a year without having to repeat the BIT.

I will be putting together a class schedule for the early part of next year and will be leading off with BIT. If the PPO is the only disicpline you will be interested in, I can't say how long it will be until I can do the instructor class.

Thanks, TraCoun. I am already a Basic Pistol Instructor, but it will probably be more than a year since my certification before you are ready to go.

Just keep me informed. I saw the overview of the PPOH course, and it looks like an excellent next step for CHL holders. I definitely want to take the class, and then we will see what has to happen to become an instructor for it.

As Marc said, I'm an NRA Instructor, not a Training Counselor. The only reason I'm able to get certified for this new course directly at HQ is because we want at least a couple of NRA Board members certified for this entirely new course. Although drawing and shooting from a holster is not an issue for IDPA/IPSC shooters, there are a lot of people who have no experience with this type of shooting. This is often due to restrictions against drawing and shooting imposed by most commercial ranges. Since this is the first NRA course to ever teach this skill, it was felt that at least some Board members should be able to speak on the subject from personal experience if/when it comes up in any number of NRA Committee meetings. I'm honored to have been chosen for the training, though I’m not sure how I got the nod with all of the fine people we have on the Board. I suspect it may be due to the fact that I have been pushing for this course for years (some would say “badgering�) and they’re doing it to shut me up!

I have no idea how long it will be before certification will be offered in all regions of the country. They are still training Master and Senior TC's now, so I believe significant progress is being made to get this course available to the public. I wholeheartedly agree that it will be a great "next step" for CHL holders who have not received advanced training. Those who shoot in action pistol matches already learned to safely draw-and-fire, but many have not had any training in self-defense shooting.

I should also point out that the NRA Personal Protection in the Home course is viewed by the NRA as a logical precursor to taking the Personal Protection Outside the Home Course, although it is not a prerequisite. So you may want to consider getting certified to teach that class while you are waiting for the new course to become available. Marc can take care of that for you.

Roughly how long do you have to go before your 1 year is up on your certification? I might be able to work my schedule to get some people through BIT and then do a PPH Instructor Class. If that sounds worthwhile, send me a PM with a rough idea of when in early 2007 would be a good time frame. The PPH Instructor class can be done in one day.

OK, but let's not go overboard on this. True, it is a good thing for anyone with a CHL to know.
And perhaps CHL Instructors should have to demonstrate this skill.
However, I don't believe it should be added to the "required" shooting course for a CHL.
I know you didn't say that, but... these things can take on a life of their own once unleashed.
