HB47: Reduction of Class Hours for Initial CHL

I have published an article on http://www.TexasFirearmsCoalition.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; titled Texans Need Relief from Excessively Long CHL Courses. I want to get an idea where people stand on this issue. There hasn't been much communication with elected officials since no hearings have been set. However, a limited number of very vocal instructors are apparently contacting House Members so the only input they are receiving at this point is in opposition to HB47.

Please read the linked article, then vote in this poll, if you are interested in this subject.

Thanks,
Chas.

Will there still be a range time required?

I've said it before and I'll say it again here... 10 hours is unnecessary.
I'd consider 4 hours a solid improvement.
I'd prefer zero mandatory hours and passing a written test on TX laws.
I'm a realist and can support the incremental change to 4-6 mandatory hours.

I worry about the cottage industry of instructors that make their livelihood (or their guns and ammo money anyway) opposing legislation that could harm them financially.

I know we have hashed this out before on other threads and I'm glad to see a poll. I voted non instructor in favor of.

I wish there was a button for "Instructor Applicant" who supports the bill, as that would be me. Texans are an adapting people - Instructors will find a way to keep their income while keeping classes 4-6 hours. I know I already have some ideas how I could make this work for me!

This just means that you should be able to teach two classes a day instead of just one. Wooohoooo, more money!!!

Non-Instructor in favor.

One of the reasons my wife does not want to take the CHL course is the 10 hour classroom time.

It would also seem to me that an instructor could have 2 classes in a day if they are only 4 hours long and actually double their income. Of course the instructor may or may not be able to have range portion on same day depending on location.

(RX8er beat me)

4-6 hours would be much better then 10. I think if they cut the youtube videos out of the class I took it would have fallin in that time frame. Now my question would be if you cut the time in half does the price go with it?

It's a nice change but it's only a one time thing for the long class. Campus carry and open carry are both better changes worth calling my state rep and senator,

I believe a basic handgun class should be required as well. I've seen some who get a CHL and had never shot a pistol before attending the class. Just because they get a CHL they still have no idea how to handle the weapon. I worked for a while in a gun range, and I've seen it first hand.

In full support, and an instructor. 10 hours is too long for people to retain most of the material. Cover the important parts (Chapter 46, Chapter 9, 30.06) and cut out the fluff.

10 hours was a significant burden for Mrs. Armed Farmer who had a baby at the time. A 4 to 6 hour class would have been much easier. 10 hours is excessive and un-necessary. Much of the time was spent just sitting around, shooting the bull and waiting for people to get their fingerprints done and photos taken.

Um, feel free to correct me, but its my understanding that the required subject matter would not change. So we'd still have to do NVDR, and all the other subjects. Right?

Right? Geees, I hope not! But, don't know at this point.
