Im looking for a few boxes of 9mm, .45 or .40 original Black Talon. Im not interested in the newer "Ranger" ammo. Im located in the Austin area. Leave me a message if you have what im looking for, thanks.

I had heard that the Black Talon was teflon coated (you know how rumors are), is that true, and/or why?

IIRC, the feature that made Black Talons popular and effective was that the jacket reliably peeled back into razor sharp petals that cut aggressively.

If that is what someone is looking for, Corbon DPX should do nicely.

They were not coated with Teflon and would not penetrate a BP vest as was commonly thought. The bullets were coated with a substance called Lubalox (sp?) that was suppossed to increase barrel life, or at least protect the barrel. The reason they are so notorious is because of thier expansion properties which allowed them to expand with sharp edges that sliced through the victims internals. 15 years ago this was new idea.

Well, that's the info I was looking for. the Lubalox stuff.
I carry the Winchester Ranger series RA45TP's in mah 45.
I had heard about all the shenanigans associated with the jacketed reverse taper HP, but the "teflon coating" was a new one to me. thanks ScubaSteve.

FWIW... The internal wound damage cause by the sharp edges were only part of the "problem" decried at the time. Trauma surgeons often blindly probe wound channels with just a gloved finger when trying to find bullet debris and/or shrapnel. Many of them (at least in California where I lived at the time) stated that they worried about lacerating their finger tips on the sharp edges of the bullet jacket and opening themselves up to risk of blood born disease transmissions (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, etc.) while doing such probing.

Now, that may or may not be a load of baloney, but I distinctly remember TV reporters trumpeting that angle at the time.

BTW, I have exactly two 7 round 1911 magazines loaded with 230 gr Black Talons left over from those days... ...and they are not for sale.

Regarding Teflon coated bullets... you may be thinking of the KTW bullet that came out a few years before the Black Talon and was the "Original" bullet proof vest piercing bullet.

The penetrating effect had more to do with the shape of the projectile, (note it was not a hollow point) and the fact that the bullet part was solid brass; than the coating:

You're right of course. I just remember that being part of their vocal argument. But I can tell you from having been involved in the treatment of hundreds of gunshot wounds, broken bones are the exception, not the rule.

Can't help you in Austin, but if you are in DFW, Bachman Pawn and Gun has 9,40, 45 and 10mm black talons. They're like $50 a box.

$50 a box? Whooooaaa. I just happened to have two boxes of .45 BT's in my gunsafe that have never been out of the box. I forgot I had em.
