From the WFAA web site.... "Chance encounter with CHL holder saves Frisco woman from robber"An unarmed lady who rides the DART system several times every week was being robbed by male with BB gun, when another lady with CHL ran him off.
CHL holder said it was first time she had carried even though she had CHL for 3 years. The witness said she'd be carrying her concealed handgun a bit more regularly after last Saturday.

My plastic should arrive today or tomorrow and I will definitely think hard about carrying 100% of the time when possible. So I have a question though...what do most of you do when you don't know if there will be a 30.06 sign waiting for you, or you will be drinking. I get the whole impairment thing for alcohol and you aren't prohibited from having a drink and carrying, but let's say I take DART to the Zoo (or any other place) and I get there and can't carry and not in car. Does anybody run into that situation?

A good friend and moderator (longtooth) here has a line in his signature that says carry 24/7 or guess right. That lady guessed right.

This story dovetails well with the thread on running toward or away from the sound of gunfire. While no shots were fired in this case, the rescuer did see robber with a gun. Even though we couldn't see her on the video, she didn't sound like someone I would have expected to come to the aid of a stranger and put her life in danger in the process. (Only the 1st time she carried a handgun in 3 years of being licensed.) As Purplehood noted in that thread, you never know until it happens.

This is a difficult situation. It worked out well but could have gone very bady. As i read this, and saw that she drew her gun and said "drop it", I was thinking that she just gave the initiative back to the robber to shoot or run. I assume she did not know it was a BB gun. Had he chose to shoot rather than run could she have reacted faster. I don't like second guessing her, specially when it worked out but this brings front and center the discussion of "you don't draw it if you are not going to use it" vs "pull it as a warning".

She was still in proximity to the woman being robbed, so she could have shot at her and she would either have to retreat or shoot at him risking hitting the woman being robbed. It definitely could have gone bad and it poses the question for all of our judgement.

Something I've done both for going to specific venues in Texas and for traveling across states is to search out info before you go. Not a difinitive but still good resource is texas3006.com. Not a bad place to register either. You get notifications when a member updates about a new sign in your area.

I thought it was relevant since the woman stated this was the first time she carried in 3 years. Just thinking through why that might be other than personal preference.

I'm thrilled that it worked out for this lady. She would have been fully justified in shooting his rear.

Both the write-up and the video are confusing (it doesn't seem for example that the two women's lives were in danger from what was ultimately determined to be a BB gun) but my take is that the unnamed witness/CHL holder had rushed to the aid of the woman who purse was about to be snatched and then the guy said "I'll shoot you" at which time she pulled her gun (no you won't!). It's not clear to me if the CHL holder knew the BG was carrying a gun or if he was waving it initially. Regardless...

Very courageous of the CHL holder to intercede; I wonder if I'd have done the same or ran off myself. I assume that along with chasing the guy off that the original victim got her money back since they caught the guy somehow.

You need to read the article again.

"The next thing I know, he goes, 'Lady, I’ve got a gun, give me your bag!'" Lanphere said.

They struggled, and in those panicked seconds, our witness ran over to help and changed everything.

"When he said, 'I’ll shoot you,' then it was, we’re in real danger right now," she said. "I just pulled my gun and said, 'Drop it.'"

She wasn't the one who said "I'll shoot you." That was the BG. And she had no way of knowing that the gun was a BB gun (which can kill in the right circumstances anyway.)

She did the right thing.
