Students face expulsion from Gonzaga because an intruder with outstanding warrants attempted to rob them in their off campus apartment. They scared the BG off with a legally owned handgun. They declared the handgun to the police who quickly caught the suspect and congratulated them for their actions. The BG was wearing a monitoring leg bracelet at the time.

However, since the off campus apartment was university owned and the university has a policy against guns on campus or on university owned property they are facing expulsion in their senior year.

Colion Noir alerted me to the story.

Won't be picking Gonzaga ever again in the final four.

I don't agree with the policy but it sounds like it was an existing written policy. They chose to live in university housing and chose to violate university policy for residents. Now they have to face the consequences.

It stinks big time, but is, sadly, likely illegal. Another reason I love online university if you have to to go. You can do your own work inch our own home no universities stupid procedures putting you in harms way. If someone breaks into your home, defend yourself and never worry about the university.

Better to be alive and have to transfer credit than to be in a coffin.

Apparently Spokane is fairly libertarian and public outcry is supporting the students.

I was in Spokane a few months ago. The areas surrounding the city of still quite rural, so it not surprising that gun ownership is common. Permits in Washington are issued by the local law enforcement, rather than by the state. Per capita, Washington State has more concealed carry permits than Texas.

:iagree:

I also would hope the public jumps on the bandwagon supporting these kids. After all college kids are not supposed to drink under age either "rlol"

I went to SeattleGuns to see what they were saying. (kinda funny how we are all the same, could have been here)

Here was a good comment:

"Fortunately contract law prohibits you from being able to sign away your rights. The university was acting as a landlord on off campus housing, and the student a tenant. Landlords can't make you sign away your tenant rights/civil rights, e.g. owning firearms."

They pointed out it was a private University. I did not know it was a Catholic University. Another comment was that since the University was the landlord they were not providing adequate security for their residents.

The article above also pointed out that some one keeps the members of the mayors who are against guns on a list and sees how they are doing election wise. Seattle's mayor is on that list and he is leaving.

His replacement is also expected to join MAIG.

Even though both are at about 48 degrees North, it's a pretty "fur piece" between Seattle and Spokane, both geographically and ideologically. The Cascade Mountains separate Washington state from the left coast.

Those people really think an employer can't fire you for carrying a gun at work or making disparaging true comments about the company?

My girlfriend's family is from Spokane. Her father knows the parents of half their basketball team, which has resulted in a bunch of Gonzaga apparel for me. He also carries daily. According to him, they guys will end up being fine. I don't know if that's wishful thinking or not though. :tiphat:

Good luck to them. Maybe that tactic will work better for them than the women who were sexually assaulted by Texas DPS on the side of the road or the multitude of people molested by TSA.

In reading through the news article I did not see the ages of the students. If they were 21 or over I can't help but think how, once again, just because it is a university property, they can trample on the Constitutional rights of those renting the apartment. I know it was a rule that they could not have guns on campus property, but what about the students' rights about home ownership/renting? When you travel and pay for a motel room, or an apartment, they can't deny you your rights.
