A man who police said was 107 years old was killed in a confrontation with SWAT officers Saturday night


"When they arrived, they were able to determine that an aggravated assault had occurred against two people at the residence," Lt. David E. Price, a Pine Bluff police spokesman, said in a statement.

The two victims were led out of the house.

It was not clear what role the suspect had in the aggravated assaults or what they were.

That's got to be some kind of record. Have to wonder if the guy was in his right mind.

Or if he had decided it was time to go.

when I read it, I actually speculated it was a bit of both... a bit of dementia, and had decided it was time to go.

I wonder how many rounds it took, and by how many shooters, to bring the old feller down?

Just think of it........ 2013 — 107 = 1906. He was 8 years old at the outbreak of WW1, and 35 when the U.S. entered WW2. He may well have been a WW2 combat vet. He would have been 44 at the outbreak of the Korean War, and 56 when Kennedy sent advisors to the Republic of South Vietnam in 1961. He witnessed the entire length of the Cold War, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, OIF, and the disintegration of Syria with another president threatening to throw American boys and girls into the meat grinder.

A century of war. What a life.

"Pauline Lewis, who lived with Mr Isadore and accompanied his daughter on Saturday when she asked him to consider moving to an apartment, said he became increasingly confused and irate and began brandishing a hand gun."

Sounds to me like one of the difficult life situations. The daughter needed to have a talk with him about needing to move and he wouldn't have it. Given it was his daughter, his age and the fact that she was thinking he needed to move, I suspect his mind wasn't quite so sharp anymore.

Sounds like a sad situation. Too bad it had to end this way.

He was locked in a room alone. They had to shoot him to protect him from shooting himself?
He was 107. I doubt he was going to make a break for it and out run them.

I understand returning fire was legal. But just like I tell my students, what's legal isn't always what's right.

It would have been different if he were advancing on the police. And maybe that's what happened. I wasn't there.
But from what little has been reported, I can't help but feel it could/should have played out much differently if they (SWAT) had been more patient or not been called at all.
Why is SWAT the answer for most problems anymore? Is it the old "If I have a hammer, every problem is a nail" situation?

I'm usually very pro LEO. Especially with the department involved in this. They were a client of mine back when I was in the Emergency Services software biz. I've spent a lot of time there. I have lots of friends in the area. I just feel someone got in a rush to go home.

Yes, he did see some good stuff, and I didn't mean to paint it all in the negative. I was just thinking of wars as the major events in national history that they are. I like me some Chicken McNuggets, but I'm not sure they are on the same scale of things as a war or moon landings.

They could have waited until he fell asleep to deal with him.

THAT, however, wouldn't have been "convenient" for our "brave" LEO's, so instead, they gassed him, flashbanged him in his own bedroom, and gunned him down like he was a homicidal maniac.

Yes, I've heard all about Franken-Food and the evils of Monsanto/Con-Agra, et al. All first world problems. Withholding these products and explaining how evil it is to a mother who's child is hungry, or going blind due to a lack of micronutrients, unable to fight disease due malnutrition, etc. is job I couldn't perform.
