Guy goes to a gun shop and rents a gun. Proceeds to shoot the clerk who returns fire and kills the man. Clerk is critical but expected to recover.

How about "this is a business that can attract crazy people" instead?

Or "this is a risky business".

The word "crazy" should not be associated with guns by a professional IMO.

I think the owner unwittingly displayed more truth about himself that he meant to with that comment. That particular store has a long-standing reputation of attracting scumbag gangbanger customers, have scumbag employees, and just general all-around crazy happenings.

Don't get me wrong, being a crummy business in no way changes the clerk's right to self defense. My only observation is his need for self defense is less surprising there than other gun stores.

The guy's a gun store owner, not a Harvard law professor or English teacher, or psychiatrist. That is the vernacular I would expect in that circumstance. Not what I might chose, although I have said such things about my businesses from time to time.

The store clerk who shot the customer who shot at him returned to work yesterday. He had been recuperating from being shot for two months.

The store owner promoted him to vice president and gave him a raise.

A local newspaper interviewed him and got a first hand account of the incident:

I find it creepy that the customer who shot at the clerk had previously rented guns at the store, talked to personnel, and seemed normal right up to the moment when he shot the clerk.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

BTW, I sometimes work in the area, northwest Indianapolis, but I have never been to that store or the mall that it is in.
