FOWLER, Calif. -- A California mother has furiously battled an masked intruder trying to kidnap her toddler daughter from their home.

Fresno County sheriff's investigators say a man wearing a black ski mask broke into the home west of Fowler just before 9 a.m. Tuesday. He knocked the woman to the floor and struck and kicked her.

The Fresno Bee (bit.ly/NwEgJ7) says the man then grabbed the woman's 2-year-old daughter and tried to get to his car.

The mother got a shotgun and ordered the attacker to release the girl.

Glad it worked out for her, but wondering if there's more to the story. . . that seemed like a purposeful targeted attempt to get the toddler. Most robbers / thieves seem to panic and scram when kids are involved.

Estranged boyfriend / ex-husband or somebody working for him? Just a sicko? I'm just curious.

In any event, I'm glad it worked out.

I would bet it was the former, rather than a random sicko.

It's a shame she didn't end his criminal career.

I agree. Question though (for anyone). Would she have been justified in shooting him after he let go of the child and turned to flee? I ask it this way, because I imagine with a shotgun she could not have shot the BG while he was holding her child.

In CA, probably not. In TX, I think she would have, but I'm not sure even if she had shot while the kidnapper was holding the baby. We can use deadly force to prevent aggravated kidnapping, so unless fighting with Mama elevated it to aggravated then maybe not. Now, if this were me and let's say there was no fight, but I discovered someone had broken into my house and had my daughter in their arms trying to run away I would have shot the kidnapper. I would have shot for the head or legs or lower torso depending on where my daughter's body was. Or just waited a few seconds and shot the person and or driver once they got into their vehicle. I had already decided that I would take whatever the consequences for me would be to keep someone from illegally taking my daughter.
