Strange story, there is probably more to it; sounds as if this guy was on something and the motive may not clear, but glad it had a good ending for the homeowner.... hopefully there will be no legal action (criminal or civil) against him.

It's probably a brain injury.

Rockford Man Protects His Family by Shooting Burglary Suspect
Updated: August 23, 2012

...takes the law into his own hands and shoots a burglar on his property.

The Walker family woke up to an alarm going off in their bedroom. When they saw the motion detection lights go on outside too, they knew something was on their property. Gerrod Walker didn't waste time thinking about what it was outside, he decided to grab the gun from the safe next to his bed. He ran outside to his garage and to his surprise two men were in the detached garage next to his house.

Walker tried opening the garage door to give them a spook, but with the burglars undeterred he went to approach them. One of the suspects ran off while the other ran to the getaway car. Walker was quick behind and pursued.

"He was able to get a hold of the wheel and we struggled and he turned the wheel, hit the gas and the vehicle started to turn into me and at that point I fired a round," said Walker.

Walker escaped with some minor abrasions from when the car hit him. His family was unharmed as well, but when he went back inside he says he needed to see his son.

"Just to be able to touch him and to know that my family was safe, that's the biggest and most important thing," Walker said.
