CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ky. – A suspected intruder was shot after trying to break in to a home in Christian County, Kentucky late Sunday night.

Authorities said the homeowner heard someone beating on the back door of a home on Sanderson Drive around 10:45 p.m. He looked outside, didn't recognize the man outside his door, so he went to get his gun.

The homeowner answered the door, and the man allegedly tried to force his way inside. Police said the suspect then tried to reach for the gun at the man's waist, and the homeowner opened fire, shooting the man in the right side of his face.

I never even go to look out the door window to find out who it is, without a gun in my hand, holster or pocket, and either, my hand is on the weapon ready to draw if necessary.

Assuming facts in the article are correct (and that's a huge assumption), I don't understand answering any door at night for somebody you don't recognize. Not to mention the back door.

Somebody banging on my backdoor at night is sending me into condition red, having me gather the family and my wife calling 911 while the Mossberg is being readied.

Maybe it's different where they live but I'm failing to understand how.
