House next door Burglarized...

So I came home from my 8 o'clock class this morning and saw a police car sitting at the house next door. The officer was sitting there taking notes down, and I walked up and asked if there was anything I could help her with. Well, apparently between 9 p.m. last night and 8 a.m. this morning, the house was burglarized. The people who own the home are selling it, and have moved out. They were there yesterday evening working on it till 9, then left to go home. Between then, and when they came this morning with the realator, the house was broken into.

Back door was forced in, and several tools/other items, including a window AC unit were stolen. Walls were vandalized with spray paint, and some faucets in the bathroom and kitchen were broken. All in all, around $3,000 in damage.

This makes me think that someone in the neighborhood did it... someone who has watched what has been going on next door. Either way, the officer was friendly and professional. I talked with her about job opportunities at the local departmen, and other stuff. I will definitely be checking doors and windows daily now. What makes me nervous is our doggy door.. the cats and dog go in and out all day, maybe I should start closing it. Just out of curiosity, I checked to see if I could fit through it one day.. I'm not bit- 5'6 and 175 lbs... but still. What makes me even more nervous is the idea of someone stealing my dog :(

Food for thought.

Lock doggy door -- kids or a BG slightly build could get through.

Snatchel, they make a doggie-door/electric color combo now that keeps the pet door closed unless an animal wearing a special collar tries to go through it. Then it will admit them (or let them out) and lock behind them. The door is made of a clear plastic/lexan type of material, and the video (below) claims it is bullet proof and cannot be defeated from outside. (In reality, nothing is invincible to a determined burglar, but if you can slow 'em down for long enough, they'll quite rather than risk getting caught.)

LOL!

My lab would lay down on the patio so the power door would stay open. That way he could watch the birds while the air conditioned air from inside washed over him. ;-)

That's crazy man. Like you said, probably someone that was around that day and saw what was going on. I worry about something similar in our neighborhood. We always have yard workers and maintenance men all around the neighborhood maintaining it. I know my dog barks like crazy everytime they come near the house but for other homes without dogs there is nothing there to deter badguys.

Most likely teenager males from within 5 to 10 houses either way. Burglars want to get in and out as fast as possible, kids want to break things. Stay up and from a darkened room window watch who walks around late at night.
