So basically they announced there was a shooting in off-campus apartment complex, but they don't know how many victims or extent of injuries, they don't know of any suspects, they've announced absolutely nothing.

Not much point in reading the link right now.

So a bystander reported 1 dead, 2 wounded. Still no police statement.

It sounds like a drunken pool party that turned deadly after fist fights broke out and escalated into beer bottles and guns.

Aren't Auburn University and other colleges on summer vacation?

:iagree:

And yes they are, but many students go during the summer too. My daughter is doing summer classes while she works to get her state residency requirements met. That will get her (us) out of the extra $10K a year in out-of-state tuition.

The latest news is that two college football players were among the dead. It is not clear if they were Auburn players.

I read what was posted here and on the links displayed.

I'm missing the direct "Auburn University" connection......other than "students lived there".

It is a tragic incident, students involved, (and I hope the shooters are found and investigated) but this is not Auburn University property, right?

I'm sure it's also near a Wal-Mart, at least 4 liquor stores and a dozen or so Stop-n-Rob's......

Why didn't they call it the "off Wal-Mart shooting" or the "near Drunky Liquor Store shooting".

Did the media need to make the connection to the University? University police are referring all queries to the local PD.

How about a little honesty in the media?....."Shooting at apartment complex near Auburn University" would have been more descriptive and accurate and not interesting, I guess.

Sorry, but I'm just cynical about the motives for the less than correct headlines.

Well, this is the way it is: bad news sells and the more sensational it is, the better it sells. For instance, I've known many people, down through the years, who've passed through "the loveliest village on the plains" as AU is sometimes called. "Auburn" is what drew my attention to the story. Had it been just another shooting, my reaction would have probably been...meh, glad it wasn't me.

There's a difference between emphasizing one part or another of a story to sensationalize it, and making up stuff. I would say that the news organizations in question invented a purely fictional connection. Even the headline on CNN's homepage just says there was a shooting "near Auburn". At some point, it ceases to be journalism and becomes a work of fiction that's merely inspired by real-life events.

I remember when my son was in school--the school had a contract with apartment complexes. It was off-campus, but still considered school housing--the housing fee was paid to the school rather than directly to the apartment
