‘It Was Fight or Die’ Says Shooter About Walmart Incident

"I did 6 years in the Marines. I was in the infantry. I went to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once. I was in Fallujah in 2005,” said Batson.

Dustin Batson is now a freshman at Texas A&M.

He has worked two years at the College Station Walmart in loss prevention.

He tried to stop a thief pushing a shopping cart of stolen merchandise into the parking lot. The thief took a shot at him, Batson took the gun away. Then the thief pulled a knife, so Batson shot the thief once with apparently the thief's gun, killing him.

Walmart essentially canned him.

Days after the incident, Batson resigned, but he says Walmart officials gave him no choice.

"They were really careful about how they worded things, but they basically told me if I didn't resign, I was going to get fired,” Batson said.

Jobless now, he has that one night shift stuck in his mind.

"I just replay it every now and then, but I try not to think about it,” said Batson. "It is a tragic situation for everyone involved. I just want this to go behind me."

Walmart sucks.

Unfortunately, I don't have a job to offer, but Dustin Batson will do just fine.

I would be very hesitant to intervene in a theft there whether an employee or not given their track record of punishing good deeds.

One would also think that an ex-Marine would have plenty of opportunities where they would be more appreciated.

I would have made them fire me. If they weren't at least a little bit afraid of what he might do (in the press, not to them personally) if fired, why did they offer him the chance to resign instead of being fired?

Many companies will do this. It can be good for a job applicant to truthfully state that he has never been fired from a position.

If he did get fired, he might also be able to collect unemployment if he appealed to TWC.

I sure wish there was a good alternative to Wal-Mart in my area...but everything else comparable is just not in my daily route. Not that it will do any good, but I'm going to write them and give them a piece of my mind, in a professional manner. Spineless weasels...

Me: I stopped a robbery in the parking lot. Guy pulled a gun and I took it from him, so he pulled out a knife. I had no choice so I shot him with his own gun. Apparently that was against Walmart policy so they fired me. I'd do it again today under the same circumstances.

Any gas station, liquor store, bank, or convenience store chain that has a policy of giving the thieves the money and not resisting. If he graduates from A&M, he'll probably be getting better jobs than those anyway.

I hope that he does. At any rate he won't have to say that he got fired by Walmart. In my experience, most employers shy away from hiring a person that is "controversial" in any way. He might even start his own firm and then he can tell his employees the story of "the time I got fired from WallyWorld for defending my life."

I agree, but why would anyone who isn't a deranged liberal want to work for any of those companies or people anyway? I work in the utility industry and if there is anyone I work with who wouldn't applaud this guy, including the hiring supervisors, I've never heard them say anything that would so indicate. Most of the people who do the grunt work, and most of the technicians and engineers, are conservatives or libertarians, and gun owners. Many of them have CHL's. I have photos of guns posted in my office and one of my female coworkers asked for a copy of one of them. I don't even know of an employee in the building, male or female, who is anti-gun. In fact, I've never heard an anti-gun sentiment expressed by anyone I work with. My company provided a free CHL course for employees. I'm sure a guy like this Marine would have no problem being hired in this industry.

From what I saw in this thread, he's trying to go to college. So why would he want to work where people don't think like he does, because he needs a job. He needs to eat and pay rent. With the economy like it is, jobs are tight. If he's going to school, he needs a job that can accomodate a class schedule. Turning down a job like this on principle sounds good until you are hungry and it's rent time. I don't know about others but when I've been in job interviews, i don't ask the interviewer to tell me how he/she feels about guns, use of deadly force etc. If i find the work place to be hostile to me, i would likely start looking for a better place to work, while I'm drawing a paycheck.

My nephew is in College Station so I'm sure he has heard of this. If he hasn't I'm going to see if we can get him a job with my nephew cleaning carpets.

During my time in the service, I was stationed at a couple of places where my immediate bosses were not, shall we say, the best of my career. Now, I couldn't just up and quit on the spot, but I could have gotten out when my enlistment was up. I didn't because the investment of my time and effort was far too great. So I can understand that there are circumstances that would keep a person working a job that they aren't very happy with.
