So is profiling a lot worse in the US than we think.

Well, at least they won't have any trouble paying off the house.

The neighborly thing to do would be to bring over a freshly baked apple pie, but Newton county just rolls a bit different I guess.

I live in a suburban neighborhood in Fort Worth. I kind of know the neighbors on either side of me...I have visuals of who lives in some of the other houses that are close. Otherwise, I couldn't begin to tell you anything about any of them...I sure in the blazes don't know enough to go sticking a gun in someone's face because they are at some house here in the neighborhood. If they try to come into MY house, now THAT is a bit different. I'm glad everyone in these news stories are so very situationally aware enough to know whose face to stick a gun into...

"The Kalonjis didn’t have the closing papers with them, so deputies arrested them, charged them with loitering and prowling and took them to jail."
I have never have had the closing papers with me when I moved into a new house. It seems like having keys to a vacant house would be pretty good proof that were the owners.

The story says it was a foreclosure. Maybe they didn't have keys.

...told by their real estate agent they should go over to the house and change the locks
Sounds like they didn't have keys. With forclosure purchase, they don't have keys (we didn't when we bought our house).
There has been lots of stories lately about squatters, so I suspect someone was being "overly vigilant". Oops.

I don't know about Georgia, but I don't think we, here in Texas, would have any legal standing to hold someone like this at gunpoint in this situation. That is one of the things that shocks me the most about this story. I really thought the two holding them at gunpoint were going to be arrested.

Another situation where I would call law enforcement and tell them what I THOUGHT and leave it up to them to sort it out.

To be clear, I'm not defending the actions of the neighbors. They shouldn't have done anything more than call the cops to report people at the house, because they knew the house was vacant.
I'm explaining why it may be reasonable for the cops to arrest the new owners until the story is verified.

And I didn't think you were. Detain, certainly. Arrest, I don't think so, but IDK. Their story should have been easy to verify by the responding LEO(s).

I wouldn't stay in that neighborhood if that's how they received me. I'd turn around and sell the house.....for about half its value, just to screw up the comps for anyone else trying to sell their house. Expensive, but satisfying....... revenge is best served cold.

Screw up the comps?

It could be. I just assumed that changing the locks meant taking out the old ones and installing new locks. It's much easier if you have keys.

So let me get this straight. The man was buying a house while black, and for his troubles he got a gun shoved in his face and cuffs slapped on his wrists? Don't you just love progress?
