LINCOLN PARK, Mich. – A Korean War veteran in Michigan is being hailed for fighting off a would-be carjacker who threatened his wife with a butcher's knife, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.

Barney Trusewicz, 81, stopped at a Lincoln Park gas station and had just stepped away from the car when Christopher Bowens, a recently released convict, allegedly attempted to steal it.

Bowens reportedly hopped into the driver's seat while Trusewicz's wife, Constance Trusewicz, was still in the passenger's seat.

It wasn't that long ago when a news headline with the phrase "elderly vet" was referring to a WWII veteran. I remember when almost every Dad in the neighborhood was a WWI veteran. Now they are almost all gone, and the phrase elderly vet is being applied to Korean War vets.

It won't be long before "elderly vet" refers to Vietnam War vets. The older I get, the faster time passes.

Back to the story, anyone who is in a fight with an knife-wielding opponent at touching distance and isn't hurt is a very fortunate man. Knives at touching distance scare me more than guns do.

But remember, we are not supposed to judge him because of his Tattoos. He just as easily could be an upstanding citizen and all around nice guy as opposed to the violent thug that he is..... :biggrinjester:

He's no youth any longer. He's 39. Here is a more recent photo

Something tells me he may be heading back to the tattoo parlor where he got his others done.

I am afraid if the that fine person with tatooed faced approached me or my family, I am drawing on his....butt. :banghead:

...safe to say he won't be selling life insurance or Bibles in this lifetime...or anything else door-to-door...not with a first impression like that...if he doesn't care any more for himself than that...why should anyone else?!!!

You know I knew a girl in college who had chosen very poorly early in life (early teens) and had gotten (illegally) a bunch of tattoos all over her upper body. When I met her she had turned her life around, but the tattoos still stayed. Poor thing, she wore long sleeves and high collars even in the hot hot summer, but of course the few that were on her hair line and above her eyebrows she could not hide. It was hard on her and she very much wanted them removed, but that is a long and painful process.

Anyway, it is not as if this guy was trying to change his life around. Sadly if I saw him in the supermarket, I would probably go the next isle and keep my eyes peeled.

...I once saw a very lovely young lady in a sundress at church...as I walked by, I saw on the back of her neck and shoulders down to her dress tattoos that were surely from her past...her demeanor and grooming offset them nicely...this guy is exactly who he appears to be...

I'm glad the couple was unharmed. Wonder what new tattoo the perp will be put on his skin--maybe picture of his butt being kicked by a senior citizen. "rlol"

I was referring sarcastically to the way that defense attorneys sometimes talk about their clients. It seems like anyone under 40 is "youthful" and might lack mature judgment.

This guy already has multiple felony convictions. He is a walking billboard for a three strikes law. I don't know if Michigan has one, but in every state aggravated assault carries enough of a sentence to put someone behind bars for decades. And according to the news story, the mope admitted to targeting the elderly couple because he thought they would be easy victims. Usually the age of the victim is a factor in "enhanced" sentencing.
