Another tactical error

Going to the home of a person who earlier stole from you may be tempting but isn't that smart.

Armed citizens use guns to defend themselves or stop crimes in some cases, but once the perp is no threat it's a job for armed law enforcement:

Definitely a bad idea regardless of how this turned out. Too much like revenge or vigilantism. Even if he'd lived he probably would have been charged with something.

I once had someone open a charge account, Chevron of all things I think, in my name. I found out who they were and where they lived and turned that information over to the fraud department for Chevron or whichever card it was. The charges were removed from my card and I was issued a card with a new number and never looked back. I have no idea what, if anything, ever happened to the thief.
