Officers said the suspects fled on foot. The homeowner chased them and eventually caught one of the men.

Once the homeowner caught the man, police said he began striking him with the shotgun.

The homeowner then made the would-be burglar go back to his home, where he held the suspect until police arrived.

Investigators say that's when another man drove up to the house. When he saw the homeowner had a gun, he tried to get away, but the homeowner fired, and hit the man in the head.
Cant' tell if the guy in the truck or yard tried to get away (assuming yard.) However, if this is actually how it went down it may not play out well for the homeowner.

True, perhaps "pickup guy" just happened to be driving by, recognized someone he knew, (who happened to be a burglar) called his name ...

You updated the post with the second story after I posted. So, IMO the homeowner is more than likely gonna be charged if he shot at someone who was not a threat.

If I'm the homeowner, I've just foiled a night-time break in... I've got one BG at gunpoint.
Second BG pulls up in the getaway car calling for the guy I'm holding. Police are who-knows-how far away.

Will BG #2 in the pickup drive down the block, stop, take cover and start shooting?
Will BG #2 take a neighbor hostage and try to trade him for his accomplice?
Until BG #2 stops moving, he is a threat in the night time and a mortal danger to me and others.

All the more resason to NOT chase down a bugular and try to hold them at gunpoint in your open yard at 2AM. Still, unless there is something else we don't know about other than the guy just yelling at an aquainteance from a pickup truck, then this homeowner is in hot water.

The operative word is "chase". You just don't do that.
