A deputy transporting a juvenile prisoner was shot by the juvenile with the deputy's gun. The juvenile was being transported to the regional juvenile detention center in Beaumont, Texas after a court appearance in Orange, Texas. As the deputy was removing the juvenile from the car the juvenile began to struggle with the deputy; he then grabbed the deputy's weapon shooting the deputy at least one time in the chest. The deputy is at a local hospital in serious condition. The juvenile is in custody.

But when will the powers-that-be figure out that having armed officers in physical contact with prisoners is not such a great idea? Prisoners have seized weapons and killed multiple innocent victims.

You still want someone armed to keep someone from taking the prisoner. It's hard to justify two people to transport one person for court, as that is likely to be a very labor intensive process at some point.


I wonder what sort of gun/holster the officer was using. I like my Glock 17 for point and shoot, but I also have a 6360 holster to keep it in to at least make it more difficult for someone else to use.

They were in the sally port. Not sure on their policy, but we always would enter the port, disarm and lock up the weapon, then get the prisoner out and pass them on through the second gate. Armed with a prisoner unrestrained (even in handcuffs) in a sally port seems a little odd to me, but maybe their policy allows (or allowed) it.

Having a deputy killed or in intensive care isn't so great for the budget, either, even if you ignore the human cost.

There is a lot of this kind of thing, with people under arrest seizing weapons, stealing cars, or escaping. A lot of officers are shot with their duty sidearm.

In Galveston County they transport all prisoners to the county jail, which is adjacent to the courthouse. Then the prisoners can be walked to their hearings indoors.

I'm wondering if there couldn't be something secured over a prisoner's hands that would prevent them from being able to grab anything during transfers like this. Something akin to a straight jacket for the hands?

I dunno.

Various agencies have used blindfolds, ankle manacles, chains that involve both the wrists and legs, and shock collars.

But you have to keep in mind that many people who are in jail or on trial have not been found guilty of a crime, and their human dignity should be preserved. Probably half the people who are arrested without a warrant are not found guilty of a crime.

Anyone on this forum could end up in jail because some police officer was ignorant of the law or suspicious of the circumstances of a self-defense use of force.

I spoke with the Orange County Sheriff this evening and was told the deputy was going to pull through OK. The wounds although serious were not as bad as they first appeared.

I think the point is XXX number of LEO’s in TX divided by x number shot with their duty side arm DOES NOT equal allot. In anyone’s common math.

ONE is to many, but several each year is not allot.

ONE IS TOO MANY....

“Of the 56 victim officers, Seven victim officers had their weapons stolen; seven officers were killed with their own weapons”
So of those covered in this report, 12.5% were killed with their duty weapon. More than I would have thought, less then I would classify as “allot”

No LEO in the commission of his lawful duties should be shot and killed, period..
