A 65 year old woman somehow "got past" security and carried a .38 revolver onto a plane at DFW.

Personally, I think every passenger on a plane should be issued a gun upon boarding. No plane would ever get hijacked again.

What am I missing? You walk through the scanner and they don't stop you. Your purse comes out of the x-ray without being stopped. Isn't that when you're supposed to grab the purse and move out? If they had detected the gun in the purse, how would they let the purse come out of the x-ray without a staff member being very attached to it?

ADDED: Of course, the woman is just wrong for having it. But as many have lamented, "Why are they harassing old ladies?"

I don't think you're missing anything. I think TSA probably dropped the ball and is shifting blame to her.

IF these TSA people had been doing their jobs, and all the intrusive search procedures were appropriate and effective, then there should have been no way that woman would get through with a firearm. Mark my words, they'll use their error as an excuse for even more draconian procedures.

They were probably paying more attention to "other things" as they were feeling around! Maybe metal detectors are the way to go.

Well, now we know where the screeners at Fair Park work in the off-season.

According to tonights news, she "Had a Concealed Handgun Lisence until recently".

Yeah, like until she carried a gun through airport security.

I cannot find a link to a similar written story but one of the TV segments indicated that she had a permit (Texas CHL?) but that she had allowed it to lapse.

One of the more interesting questions is: how did the woman leave the security area before her screening was complete as TSA now claims? The process that I've experienced allows every passenger to pick up their bag on the output of the belt unless a screen requests a bag check. So she simply did what I've done hundreds of times.

This would also be a great time for someone to leak the stories about the TSA's own security tests where internal TSA agents attempt to get guns through the screening process. That failure rate remains a closely guarded secret.
