Interesting story of two bow hunters who were charged by a grizzly. One of the hunters was armed with a 357 revolver and was able to stop the grizzly a few feet from the two of them.

Wasn't sure where to post but since it was "self defense" and is under investigation by the authorities, I figured this was a fit.

Wow, sounds like he was prepapred for the situation. five shots for the bear, a sixth for your buddies foot so you can out run him. JK.

Trying to figure where this happened. Madison XX? It mentions Big Sky, so is that Montana? Awesome story.

Found it, yes Montana.

The mountain range is near Ennis, MT. about 65 miles from Yellowstone. The county is Madison Co.

I wonder if that would fall under "Necessity"?

Yes, it should have been a necessity.

I met a Sheriff's deputy on a hiking trail one summer. He was returning from fishing a lake I was headed to. He asked me to give him my gun; then he proceeded to unload it. I asked if there was a problem and he said "sure is". I was frozen (open carry is legal in Montana) not knowing what I'd done wrong.

He continued "this gun is loaded all wrong". Then he smiled and told me to alternate JHP and ball ammo but start with the ball ammo. He said I'd only need 5 or 6 cartridges because a bear would be running toward me and I'd not get to fire more than 3.

I said I could get off more than that and he said if I did it would mean I was shooting before the animal charged and that would get me in trouble. He cautioned that self defense or protection of another was the only reason to shoot an animal with a pistol. That gave me pause for thought.

I still carry a full magazine. Who knows if I'd be able to use it all. I tend to think I am more skilled than perhaps I really am

I love how they keep going on in the article about bear spray against a full size adult grizzly in full charge mode.

Won't display the image here because it uses a (relatively mild) word against the TOS but here ya go:
