no bueno!

my instinct tells me that this was an accident.

but do you think there was an intent to do harm here, or just an honest mistake?

Since the passenger's story didn't jive with the evidence (dated receipts) I have a hard time accepting that the gun's presence was accidental.

What he planned to do with it is anyone's guess.

Those receipts really make him look guilty. That being said, I flew from Houston to Boston, where I go to school, in August, and it wasn't until I got here that I realized I had a couple loose .45ACP rounds in the main compartment of my backpack and a plastic bag of about 50 .40 cal rounds in the front compartment of the backpack. No handguns, but I totally understand how you can forget stuff is in the bag. I was mostly shocked that I wasn't arrested.

It is usually easy to tell if someone is feeding you a line or telling you the truth when questioned on things like this. Usually if everything checks out you will probably be scolded and released. However, had they found the rounds I can bet you would have missed your flight at a minimum.

i have a ton of different bags at my house and at any given time i will retrieve one and use it as my 'carry all' bag for a while. i cant begin to tell you the number of odd things ive found in my bags after using them for weeks...

in one instance, i found a banana that had been rotting in one of the pockets for so long that it was reduced to the size of a jalapeno.

it was disgusting.

point is, i didnt know it was there and didnt find it until i was looking for a pen one day.

had that been a pocket pistol, like the charged was carrying, and some ammo - i'd have been in the exact same boat... WITH receipts from all kinds of places sitting around and possibly on top of it.

i guess im just thinking that if someone were to carry on with the intent of doing harm, they would; 1) find a better hiding spot and 2) pick something besides a pocket pistol that will require 5-7 well placed shots to take down an averaged size man.

Maybe I'm just a worry ward... but... If I'm getting on an airplane, I check my bags pretty carefully before I start packing them.
I do fly with guns and ammo occasionally and other times I carry-on the same bag when I'm heading to places where my permit is not honored.
And I NEVER use my briefcase or laptop bag for anything gun related.

I value my clean record and CHL too much to risk anything less.
(Now watch me mess up next time I fly... )

How do you forget where your gun is? Anyone else have that problem?

Well, yeah, I have forgotten which range bag it might be in, but I don't use the same bag to go to the range as I do to travel.

However, I can tell you that if I am traveling by air, EVERY pocket, nook and cranny gets gone through on my travel bags to make sure there is no contraband in there.

LOL

my father in law has about 8 guns stashed throughout the house, his trucks and his 'garage.'

while i personally could not foresee losing any of my guns, i could see it happening with those who own a lot.

for the record, im not defending this dude's actions - just trying to play devils advocate. :evil2:

Did he have a CHL? Probably not. Thus he was illegal just carrying it in a bag. If I was "Middle Eastern" I would be extra careful about not bringing a loaded handgun on to a plane.

I use the same bags for travel all the time and never keep anything that would cause a problem in them.

If I'm going to check a bag with gun / ammo, knife, tools, etc. the gun goes in a lockbox, the ammo in a conspicuous original ammo container, and the knife, tool set, etc. goes in an orange nylon zipper bag so I can't miss it when I unpack. All these items go only in the main compartment, which I unpack completely except for the toiletry and liquids bags, which are never used to carry item that wouldn't be allowed in a carryon bag.

Having rigid rules that become habits prevents having to come up with long and dubious explanations to those gentle folks behind the scanning machines.....

After the fact, you'll still get a really stiff TSA fine even when no criminal charges are pressed.

Personally, I am a believer that most of what TSA does is for show to help keep the sheeple feeling safe, rather than genuine "security". But even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.
