In Hitchcock around noon Tuesday an armed robber hijacked a truck whose driver was delivering tobacco products to a convenience store. Police located the hijacked vehicle, and a high-speed chase mostly on I-45 ensued.

The driver stopped at one point in a Walmart parking lot in La Marque and threw out cases of cigarettes, which the customers predictably scrambled for.

The robber continued driving and abandoned the truck on FM 518 east of I-45 in League City. He disappeared into the neighborhood on foot and eluded a manhunt by police.

The robber was described as a black man of medium height and build. That should narrow down the search.

This is a pretty clear case of planned theft of a valuable and salable cargo. I don't know what channel stolen cigarettes go into—probably the same people who sell counterfiet DVDs and "bath salts" to convenience stores.

For most Wal-Martians someone throwing out free cigarettes would be almost like Robin Hood!! (Or maybe Robin from the Hood)
