This should almost go in the 'Never Again!' section, but for the fact that the person in question didn't survive :-(

Poor guy was robbed and beat last year. This time the he died in a shootout with robbers. Reportedly the shooter took the security tapes to prevent identification.

I know it's good to have the VCR (aka DVR) physically separate from the camera(s); I wonder how many people think to put the DVR in a physically secure location, like inside of a safe? You'd need a small access hole in the back of the safe for electricity and the camera feed(s).

Can't recall the exact story, or provide a link but somewhere in the past I read about a bank in a rural
area that had a small, elderly, inconspicuous security guard.

Two guys came in to rob the bank and either didn't notice this old man, or thought he was harmless.

This little old man drew a 1911 and dropped both of the robbers. :-)

Aren't there video security cameras that stream to a website so robbers would never be able to confiscate a physical device in the store?

Safes are UL Fire Rated for certain amounts of time and that would invalidate the fire rating by poking a hole in it.

Ah, he was talking about the safe, not the dvr.

I was thinking of filling the hole w fire putty.
